Child actors have had mixed success — some steal our hearts for a minute, others stand the test of time. Wonderwall.com takes a look at the child actors who got their start in children’s television shows – often at Disney and Nickelodeon – and the amazing careers they have today, starting with this actor… Leonardo DiCaprio was 15 when he started on television to appear in “Growing Pains” as a homeless boy who is taken in by the Seaver family.

Hilary Duff almost reprized her role as Lizzie McGuire (now in her 30s), but the show was axed in 2020 due to creative differences. However, Hilary is still a TV queen: she starred on Younger from 2015-2021 and Hulu’s How I Met Your Father since 2022.

After Barney, Selena Gomez also snagged a Disney show in 2007 — Wizards of Waverly Place. She then found success in music with hits like “It Ain’t Me” and “Come & Get It” and with her cosmetics brand Rare Beauty, though she also continues to act, most recently in Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building.

She then focused on making music and touring, although she had taken a hiatus from performing in recent years as she successfully fought to end the conservatorship that dominated her life for more than 13 years.

After rising to stardom at age 13 on The All-New Mickey Mouse Club, Ryan Gosling turned his childhood acting roles into a highly regarded acting career, earning two Academy Award nominations, among other awards and nominations. In between, he acts in films such as “La La Land” and “First Man” and raises two daughters with actress Eva Mendes.

Christina Aguilera launched her pop music career around the same time her old Disney co-stars Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears launched theirs. Her powerful vocals were behind songs like “Dirrty,” “Genie in a Bottle,” and “Beautiful.” Xtina was also an original coach on The Voice, appearing on the music competition show between 2011 and 2016.

Unlike most of her The All-New Mickey Mouse Club co-stars, Keri Russell – who started on the show when she was 15 – focused only on acting after that. Most notably, she starred in Felicity and The Americans.

JC Chasez, who started out on Disney’s The All-New Mickey Mouse Club when he was 15, worked with co-star Justin Timberlake in boy band *NSYNC for years before they both launched simultaneous solo careers. JC hasn’t had the same success as Justin, but he has teamed up with some notable acts such as 3OH!3 and Smokey Robinson for projects in recent years.

Kids Incorporated introduced Mario Lopez (on drums) and Fergie (right, in shorts) to audiences in the 1980s.

Mario Lopez started on Kids Incorporated when he was 11 but rose to fame in his teens with Saved by the Bell. Today he is a successful radio and television presenter who has hosted shows such as Extra, The X Factor and Access Hollywood.

Fergie stayed in music after Kids Incorporated, which she first appeared on at age 9. She then sang in the girl group Wild Orchid, but found greater success as the sole singer of the Black Eyed Peas before embarking on a solo music career.

In 2006, viewers met Miley Stewart, a teenage girl played by Miley Cyrus who lived a secret life as pop star Hannah Montana in Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana.

Miley Cyrus couldn’t wait to shed the Disney good girl image she fostered after auditioning for Hannah Montana when she was 13. Today, she’s an offbeat pop singer with hits like “Wrecking Ball” and “We Can’t Stop.”

Before becoming Drake, Aubrey Graham began his career in Canada as Jimmy Brooks, a former basketball player who uses a wheelchair in Degrassi: The Next Generation.

Drake became a true rapper in 2009 with the release of ‘Best I Ever Had,’ which launched a superstar music career for the Canadian that’s been packed with hit singles — and he’s got four Grammys to his name.

Audiences first met Ariana Grande when she was a Nickelodeon kid — she played Cat Valentine on Victorious from 2010 and then portrayed the same character on Sam & Cat, which premiered in 2013.

Ariana Grande began her transition into music while “Sam & Cat” was airing. With songs like “thank u, next” and “God is a Woman,” she’s had tremendous success over the six studio albums she’s released.

Shia LaBeouf grew up before our eyes as Louis Stevens in the Disney Channel series Even Stevens, which premiered in 2000. He won the job at age 14.

Ben Affleck has been an A-list movie star since he starred in and co-wrote ‘Good Will Hunting’ in 1997, for which he received an Oscar for his efforts. Since 1997 he has taken home another Oscar (for the 2013 production of ‘Argo’, which he also directed and starred in) and has acted in films such as ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Gone Girl”.

Between 1996 and 2002, Amanda Bynes was a Nickelodeon darling, appearing in All That and Figure It Out before earning her own series, The Amanda Show.

Bella Thorne has caused quite a bit of controversy since Shake It Up! ended in 2013. While she starred in movies like The DUFF and The Babysitter, things like making $1 million in a day on OnlyFans made headlines.

Melissa Joan Hart was the popular girl next door Clarissa Darling on Nickelodeon’s Clarissa Explains It All between 1991 and 1994. At the age of 15 she began to play in the hit series.

Since Clarissa Explains It All, Melissa Joan Hart has consistently worked in television, starring in long-running shows like Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Melissa & Joey, as well as Lifetime films. She is also an experienced producer.

Since then, Dylan has appeared in films such as After We Collided and The Curse of Turandot, and serves as the brewmaster at his All-Wise Meadery in Brooklyn. Cole has starred in the hit TV series Riverdale since 2017, when the brothers began taking on their own projects.

Nickelodeon’s “iCarly” introduced us in 2007 to then 14-year-old Miranda Cosgrove.

Miranda Cosgrove returned to her roots in 2021 when she re-emerged as Carly Shay in an iCarly reboot after a nine-year hiatus. In between her roles as Carly, she also worked as a voice actress on the Despicable Me franchise and other projects.
