Always in our hearts. Hollywood mourned the likes of Betty White and John Madden in the closing days of 2021 — and sadly, 2022 also came with celebrity deaths that left fans reeling.
The sports world lost a great footballer in Dan Reeves, who passed away on January 1st. The 77-year-old Georgia native appeared in nine Super Bowls during his career, winning once as a player and once as an assistant coach.
As one of the most successful coaches in league history, his loss felt far and wide. “The football world lost a damn coach and man today in Dan Reeves,” said the former Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway said in a statement on Jan. 1. “Dan was a winner and I owe him a lot. My heart goes out to Pam and the entire Reeves family.”
A day later, the Christian music industry lost a beloved musician, Jay Weaver. His former bandmate and brother from Big Daddy Weave, Mike Weber, confirmed his death from COVID-19 complications. Jay was 42.
“Thank you for all your prayers for my brother,” Mike said in a statement Jan. 2, after Jay was hospitalized with the virus a few days earlier. “You went through a big fight with him and I’m so sorry to break the news, but I’m also looking forward to celebrating where he is right now. My brother Jay went to Jesus a few hours ago for complications from COVID-19 on top of everything else he already had.”
He continued: “The Lord used [Jay] so many years down the road in such a mighty way…I believe even though COVID has breathed its last, Jesus was right there to catch it. My heart is broken for my family, but we all really wanted to thank you for going through so much with us for so long.”
On January 5, the Korean film world mourned the loss of a young star, Kim Mi-soo, who passed away at the age of 29.
“Kim suddenly left us on January 5,” the late artist’s agency, Landscape Entertainment, said in a statement translated by publication Korea JoongAng Daily. “The bereaved are deeply saddened by the sudden sadness. Please refrain from reporting false rumors or speculation so that the family can grieve in peace.”
