Cal Wilson dead at 53: Australian celebrities react to shock news as Grant Denyer declares ‘I’m shaking’

Fans and friends have expressed themselves “devastated” by the news that popular New Zealand stand-up comedian and author Cal Wilson has died aged 53.

The popular comedian died after a “short illness,” her management Token Artists announced on Wednesday.

She leaves behind husband Chris and son Digby.

Wilson’s former SlideShow co-star Grant Denyer paid tribute to the comedian, thanking her for “everything” on Instagram.

“My goodness. I’m shaking. I can’t believe what I’m reading. How incredibly sad,” Denyer began.

“The most tender, kind, generous and talented artist I have ever had the pleasure of working with.

“This is devastating. Your poor family. I love you, Cal… thank you for everything. You’re so special, Xox.”

Denyer and Wilson appeared on Channel 7’s game show SlideShow in 2013.

Actress Rebel Wilson, who has worked with the comedian on “several projects,” also gave a heartfelt tribute to the performance.

“This is so tragic and my condolences go out to Cal’s family,” said the Hollywood actress.

“I have been very fortunate to have worked with Cal on several projects, particularly in the last few years where she has written brilliant material for me.

“She was incredibly talented and incredibly kind.”

New Zealand comedian Melanie Bracewell said: “A ray of sunshine. We will miss you so much, Cal ❤️”

Olivia Newton John’s niece Tottie Goldsmith wrote: “Beautiful Cal, I can’t quite believe it. We all love you so much. My heart goes out to your family and closest friends at this time. We will miss you very much 🕊️ 🤍.”

“May her colorful energy and bright light be remembered,” wrote Masterchef judge Melissa Leong.

Interior designer Shaynna Blaze said: “I can’t even understand it at the moment. The most divine, radiant human being I have observed, admired and worked with.

“This is heartbreaking. Much love to her husband, son and family. This is a very, very sad day.”

Fellow comedian Steph Tisdell wrote: “This is absolutely devastating news.

“An incredibly generous person, performer and ray of hope. I enjoyed every yarn we had and every stage we shared.

“All my love goes out to family and friends.”

“This is devastating news! Sending all my love to Cal’s beautiful family💜,” said TV personality David Subritzky.

Wilson’s former Bake Off co-star Darren Purchese said: “Oh Cal – you were the best. I can’t believe this news. I loved you very much and send my condolences to Chris, Digby and the family 💔💔💔💔💔”.

“I can’t believe it. A beautiful person who left far too soon. Thinking of all her loved ones. ❤️,” said stand-up comedian Daniel Connell.

The stand-up comedian has appeared at the Melbourne Comedy Festival 14 times throughout her career and most recently hosted Great Australian Bake Off.

“We are devastated to share the news that Cal Wilson, the popular stand-up comedian, writer and actor, died today surrounded by family and friends at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney after a short illness,” said Token Artists in a statement.

“Cal’s generosity, talent and friendship have been constants on the Australian comedy scene over the last twenty years.

“Cal was loved by her family, friends, fans and peers and a huge hole has been left in the heart of our community.”
