SONOMA, Calif. (AP) – Top Fuel star Steve Torrence won the NHRA Sonoma Nationals on Sunday for his third straight win and second to open the three-race western swing.
Torrence, the championship leader and three-time defending champion of the series, defeated Leah Pruett in the final with a 3.757-second run at 327.98 mph. He has six wins this season and 46 overall wins.
“I went up there and was a little nervous on the (start line) and just got away with it,” said Torrence. “I did everything I could to screw up this last lap. These Capco guys are amazing and I’m just the lucky guy who is blessed to drive it. It’s so fun to drive here and we’re still hoping to sweep the momentum. “
The western swing ends next week at the Auto Club Raceway in Pomona.
Robert Hight took his third Funny Car win in a row on the track, Aaron Stanfield led the Pro Stock field and Karen Stoffer won the Pro Stock Motorcycle.
Hight beat Matt Hagan with a 3,971 at 322.50 in a Chevrolet Camaro SS. He has three wins this season and 53 wins overall.
Stanfield won for the second time that year, beating Dallas Glenn with a 6.557 to 209.56 in a Chevrolet Camaro.
Stoffer drove to her 10th career win and the first since 2019. She beat Andrew Hines with a 6.798 at 197.36 on a Suzuki.
