MERIDIAN, miss. (WTOK) – The State Games of Mississippi took place in June, but a recent study showed the Games grossed Lauderdale County millions of dollars.
The State Games of Mississippi works with Mississippi State University every 5 years to study the economic impact of the Games on the local community.
The study compiles a list of viewers and athletes. Research what they spend on hotels, restaurants, shops, gasoline, and more.
The 2016 study showed the games grossed $ 9.3 million.
In their study for 2021, the organizers found that the games grossed a record high of $ 12 million.
Over 5,000 amateur athletes from all over Mississippi took part in the games this summer with over 15,000 spectators.
“We try to add sports every year and only optimize the ones we have. We’re doing more publicity to get the athletes to come here and really with our volunteers and all the help we have I think the impact has gone up that much. We are really proud of that. They eat at our restaurants and stay at our hotels and shop in our malls and the surrounding area, so I mean, it’s really good for our city and Lauderdale County, ”said Missye Dozier, executive director of the State Games of Mississippi.
Dozier said she looks forward to the impact future State Game events will have on the community.
