The meat of several protected African animals is illegally imported into Belgium and sold there.
Sophie Gombeer of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences and her colleagues have identified wild animal meat, also known as bush meat, which is sold in several markets in Brussels.
They identified the meat of three species classified as protected under CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wildlife: the red-tailed monkey, the De Brazza monkey, and a small species of antelope called the Blue Duiker. Game meat is imported under EU law …
