Sport is “very important” in life with dementia

A County Armagh man with dementia said exercise was a “very important” part of his life.

Gerard Doran, 62, who played and trained GAA in Lurgan, said the physical and mental benefits of participating in the sport and mountain hiking made him feel “accomplishing”.

“Exercise is incredible to me for friendship, emotion, achievement, and it’s not just physical, the mental abilities and benefits are incredible,” he told BBC News NI.

“Meeting my friends and talking about all these times, all these years, is still a very important part of my life.”
