The fourth season of The Crown has rekindled interest in the late Princess Diana – not that she was ever gone. Get all the behind the scenes insights on the Crown at

The portrayal of the Queen making a rocky transition into public life in the early 1980s – and the impressive performance of actress Emma Corrin – was both praised by Diana biographers and harshly criticized by the royal family. While the Netflix drama takes up the narrative of young Diana, it’s entertainment rather than a documentary, but it brings her story to a whole new generation and refreshes the memories of those who have seen her in real time.

Over the weekend, a tweet from the official report by Prince Charles and his second wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, was flooded with references to the late Diana and The Crown. This despite the fact that Diana was not even mentioned, but a simple statement from the Duchess about the entries received for an essay contest promoting literacy among young people.

The new episodes of the Emmy award-winning drama were released on November 15th. They desperately depict Diana trying (usually in vain) to please the royal family, especially her husband, who has been deeply in love with Camilla all along, has been viewed as an unsuitable woman.

The real Diana and Charles announced their split in 1992 and officially divorced in 1996. But it had taken a long time.

Diana revealed in a 1995 interview that she believed her union never really stood a chance, as Charles and Camilla had a lasting bond at the time Diana and Charles got married in that lavish 1981 spectacle.

The story goes on

In 1995, when Diana sat down with journalist Martin Bashir for an interview that had not been approved by the Crown, she called out the other woman. When asked if Camilla was a factor in the divorce, Diana said, “Well, there were three of us in this marriage so it was a little crowded.”

Charles and Camilla finally married in April 2005. That was over seven years after Diana was tragically killed in a car accident in Paris after the paparazzi chased the vehicle in which she was traveling on August 31, 1997.

Just as The Crown has brought the “People’s Princess” back into the spotlight, Diana’s interview is also being subjected to a new test. The BBC announced on November 11 that it would open an investigation into allegations that surfaced earlier this month that Bashir used dishonest methods to persuade Diana to interview.
