Roommate, if you grew up in the ’90s, I don’t have to tell you what a huge hit’ The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air ‘was. The television show was Will Smith’s coming-out party and the catalyst for his hugely successful acting career. And if you’re a real OG fan of the show then you know there were two “Aunt Vivs”. The OG ‘Aunt Viv’, also known as Janet Hubert, and then her successor, Daphne Maxwell Reid, who stayed on the show until her ‘finale. To this day, fans didn’t exactly know why Janet was being replaced, a moment reworked in the special ‘The Fresh Prince Reunion’ that aired on HBO Max.
In the special, the entire cast came back together to give us a glimpse into the show’s success. While it was very informative, the clip anyone can stop about was when Janet sat independently with Will Smith and talked about why she was asked to leave the show. When Janet spoke to Will about her exit as “Fresh Prince”, she explained that the end of her career in Hollywood was considered “difficult”. Janet went on to say that she lost everything, her career and her reputation, after she and Will and she, the cast, said she was too difficult to work with. See the clip below:
Janet said it was difficult to receive the “kiss of death”. During the special, Will admitted to being “insensitive” to Hubert, who was actually pregnant in the third season, and how he now understands that he had “made the set very difficult” for her. If you haven’t seen the reunion yet, it’s definitely a must see!
