Zero-knowledge evidence now lives on Bitcoin

Zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs have quickly become one of the most debated topics in blockchain technology.

For the past few days, the technology has been deployed to the Ethereum (ETH) mainnet, but now many new teams are working to scale and optimize the technology for Bitcoin.

A Swiss non-profit organization called the ZeroSync Association, based in Zug, Switzerland, is one of several organizations currently working on developing zero-knowledge proofs for Bitcoin (BTC).

What is zero knowledge evidence?

The core technology of ZK Proofs theoretically allows users to validate the state and transaction history of the Bitcoin blockchain without downloading the entire chain or trusting a third party.

While numerous reports have focused on other Layer 2 rollups being deployed on the Ethereum mainnet, the ZeroSync coalition – consisting of Robin Linus, Tino Steffens and Lukas George – plans to optimize and secure their ZK rollup in the coming ones weeks to improve.

“It’s still in the prototype phase,” Robin Linus, co-founder of ZeroSync, told CoinDesk, adding, “The big vision is that you download that one megabyte of proof, and that’s as good as if you got the 500 gigabytes.” would have downloaded.”

ZK evidence is essentially two parties confirming each other’s identities – without revealing other information to third parties who may be watching.

The competition in zero-knowledge technology is intensifying

ZeroSync is joined by others in an increasingly crowded field of developers interested in privacy, security, and access to the world’s largest and most important blockchains.

Others like StarkWare, which were first tested on Ethereum, have also started moving to Bitcoin.

With ZK rollups now revising models for checking network health, the race is on to secure market share while newly formed ZK developers optimize and begin scaling.

StarkWare co-founder Eli Ben-Sasson holds a Ph.D. in theoretical computer science and has been studying ZK Proofs since 2001. He has held research positions at renowned institutions such as the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, Harvard and MIT and is considered one of the leading experts in mathematics in the field.

StarkWare uses what it calls an off-chain prover and on-chain verifier approach to unlock mass scalability by enabling off-chain processing of large computations while ensuring their integrity on-chain with minimal overhead.

StarkEx, Cairo and Starknet are some of the products they have developed to achieve this and – along with ZeroSync and others like Polygon with their recent launch of a zkEVM – the race is on to develop optimized and scalable solutions for popular mainnets .
