The launch of the controversial digital ID crypto project Worldcoin has sparked a wave of attention and debate. Led by Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, Worldcoin made headlines with its promise to introduce a futuristic digital identity system based on iris scanning that differentiates humans from artificial intelligence (AI) entities.
The process – proof of identity – generates a unique world ID, with all biometric data stored on a decentralized blockchain. The innovation lies in the zero-knowledge-proof mechanism, which enables human verification without revealing the underlying data.
Although Worldcoin caused controversy since its inception, it secured an impressive $115 million in funding in May and saw over 2 million signups ahead of its debut. The official launch, which took place on July 24, met with a rather muted response.
However, critics of the project raised privacy concerns and questioned Worldcoin’s approach to securing and managing personal data. While the project affirms compliance with relevant laws and regulations, experts have pointed out potential flaws in its design. Cybersecurity specialists and Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin have raised concerns about the methodology used to generate world IDs.
The company now plans to make its technology available to businesses and governments to implement localized systems without collecting personal data, which could have multiple implications.
Finally, the fact that the project avoids launching its token in the United States shows a keen understanding of potential legal hurdles. With the attention of regulators in the UK and European Union, and concerns expressed by industry experts, Worldcoin’s path forward is complex. The delicate balance between innovative digital identity solutions and individual rights will likely determine the fate of the project in an ever-evolving landscape of data and privacy regulations.

Worldcoin allows government and corporations to use the ID system
Worldcoin plans to expand operations to allow governments and corporations to use its iris scanning and identity verification technology to increase user sign-ups. According to Tools For Humanity, the developer of Worldcoin, the company aims to “build the largest possible financial and identity community” and allow third parties to use its iris scanning technology. Worldcoin intends for companies to pay to use its digital identity solution if they want to implement localized systems without collecting personally identifiable information.
GameStop will stop supporting its crypto wallets citing “regulatory uncertainty”.
Gaming retailer GameStop announced plans to phase out its digital wallets starting in November, citing “regulatory uncertainties in the crypto space.” Launched in May 2022, the wallets allow users to manage cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens. GameStop advised users to ensure access to secret passphrases by October 1st. It’s unclear which aspects of the “regulatory uncertainty” the company was referring to. GameStop is headquartered in the United States, where lawmakers and regulators have taken controversial approaches to crypto and blockchain.
