“Still in research mode” with Web3, says NFTs, CEO of Ubisoft, Yves Guillemot

In a recent interview, Yves Guillemot, CEO of Ubisoft, spoke at length about the video game company’s adoption of blockchain technology and “Web3 capabilities” and acknowledged that the company is “still in research mode”.

He said The French games studio is researching many new technologies, including cloud computing and Web3, but ultimately it’s still a “testing ground” to see if these new technologies “really meet the needs of players.”

Guillemot also admitted that the company is new NFT Offers (so far only Ghost Recon Breakpoint) are still in their infancy: “We probably weren’t good at saying we do research […] We should have said we’re working on it, and if we have something that will bring you real benefit, we’ll bring it to you.”

According to the CEO, Ubisoft became an early adopter of new technologies like VR and blockchain because, from a tactical point of view, there is currently relatively little competition and people are interested in trying new things.

“Exploring doesn’t mean starting,” says Guillemot. “This industry is evolving fast and is very cautious about the impact it will have. Like so many things, it’s not as good as it could be at first, but like other new technologies, it will find its way.”

Ubisoft, NFTs and crypto games

Earlier this year, Ubisoft tapped Tezos to bring NFTs to its account last Ghost Recon title. The news polarized gamers, with many tweet the company to say they are uninstalling Ubisoft software, citing environmental concerns or fears that the company is promoting pay-to-win business models.

The company’s NFT pivot fared little better on YouTube; the announcement video for its AAA gaming NFT platform, Ubisoft Quartz was dismantled upon receipt over 95% dislikes.

Despite the backlash, Guillemot would like to emphasize that this is exactly why Ubisoft is using Tezos Proof of Stake (PoS) blockchain that is more environmentally friendly than the current technologies of the market leaders Bitcoin and Ethereum.

The Ubisoft boss claimed that Tezos “has lower energy consumption per transaction than sending emails: a standard email is equivalent to 4g of Co², while a transaction on Tezos is equivalent to 2.5g of Co²”.

In March, the company invested in a blockchain-based trading card game called Cross the times. Ubisoft has also bought land in Pixowl’s Ethereum-based metaverse The Sandbox.

The following month, Ubisoft announced that this was the case End of NFT support for Ghost Recon Breakpoint, but confirmed that the Quartz initiative would be extended to future titles.
