The race has begun for the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to begin reviewing a slew of new Bitcoin ETF applications.

As noted by ETF analysts Eric Balchunas and James Seyffart in their tweets, the SEC has officially recognized Bitcoin ETF applications from major companies such as BlackRock, VanEck, Invesco/Galaxy Digital, Fidelity and WisdomTree. It is worth noting that ARK Invest/21Shares has already passed this stage of the process as Bitwise Investment received confirmation the day before.

However, Balchunas warned that these recognitions do not necessarily mean approval but mark the beginning of the official review process.

The potential approval of a spot bitcoin ETF remains a hot topic for the cryptocurrency market as such a product would provide traditional investors with significant exposure to bitcoin.

This is of particular interest as the SEC has yet to approve spot Bitcoin ETFs, despite the growing number of applications. Although the SEC has acknowledged these recent filings, there is no guarantee that approval will be granted.

Bitcoin ETFs are considered a key catalyst in the growth and maturity of the Bitcoin market as they would allow retail and institutional investors to access the cryptocurrency without having to own or manage it directly. This could bring a new level of liquidity and stability to the market.

Additionally, approval of a Bitcoin ETF could be seen as a regulatory seal of approval, potentially encouraging broader adoption and use of the cryptocurrency.

The SEC’s acceptance of these filings does not mean that approval is imminent, and indeed some skepticism remains.
