Discussions about Bitcoin’s pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, have resurfaced on social media. In the last few hours, a Satoshi-era Bitcoin wallet with 1,432 BTC worth $37,854,468 has been reactivated after more than 10 years. This added to existing conversations on Twitter about Satoshi.
Gene Hoffman, CEO of the Chia Network, commented on one of the Twitter discussions about Satoshi. A look at the tweets in the discussion thread suggests that some believe Satoshi is likely a group of people and not a single individual. Hal Finney and Len Sassaman were named as the two most likely candidates for “Satoshi” or active members of the Satoshi “team”.
Hoffman joined the conversation and said there was one wildcard person left in addition to Hal Finney and Len Sassaman. In his opinion, Phil Zimmerman, the inventor of Pretty Good Privacy (PGP), an email encryption tool made available to the general public via FTP download, may not be that person.
A Twitter user suggested Bram Cohen, a contributor to the legendary Cypherpunk mailing list where Satoshi first announced Bitcoin, and a close associate of Len Sassaman.
Hoffman responded uncertainly, pointing out the possibility that someone else might have walked in unprepared as well, or might have been active on the Satoshi team and know how to keep that unclear.
However, this all remains speculation and to this day the exact identity of Satoshi Nakamoto remains a mystery.
Hal Finney, Len Sassaman
Len Sassaman, nicknamed Len, was a cyberpunk developer working on PGP encryption and open-source privacy technology. He was also an academic cryptographer and worked with blockchain inventor David Chaum on P2P network research.
A tribute to Len Sassaman has been hacked into transaction data on the Bitcoin network node.
Hal Finney received the first version when the bitcoin code was ready and the software was ready for testing. He downloaded the code and connected to the Bitcoin network on January 10, 2009. The first device to connect to Satoshi’s network was his computer.
Two days later, he received 10 BTC from Satoshi Nakamoto in the first computer-to-computer bitcoin transaction. However, before his death, Finney refuted the claim that he was Satoshi.
