An ongoing dilemma of poor user experience has slowed growth and adoption in the Web3 ecosystem. In a recent conversation with one of Harvest Finance community leader, “Red,” a better understanding of the UX bottleneck has been provided.
While the decentralized web offers numerous benefits, ease of use has not yet caught up with the Web2 user experience. Red, who has played a key role in growing the Harvest Finance community, provided a high-level overview of the issues he and the team are tackling.
“One of the big flaws in DeFi is essentially UX, the customer experience. It can be very difficult, some are very complicated, you know, having to withdraw your money Coinbase Global Inc COIN to Metamask and then connect to that site, make approvals and make deposits,” Red said.
“It’s just way too many steps and it’s confusing. Your Aunt Matilda will never find out. At Harvest we try to be very conscientious about it.”
Harvest Finance undergoes several updates to further improve the user experience, all in hopes of reducing friction for the average user and protecting user security.
“Harvest Finance is a yield farming aggregator. So there can be hundreds of different ways that users can deposit assets within the crypto ecosystem and earn a return,” Red said.
“But one of the hardest things about crypto is trying not to get scammed, right? There’s just so many different things they can offer, you know, a lot of money. And ultimately, these projects will not be very good.”
Red added: “Farming takes a few steps to grow your yields and earn an APY versus an APR. So Harvest essentially automates this entire process. There is automatic compounding, so when you deposit Ethereum ETH/USDmaybe farm a random token, but the Harvest mechanism will sell that random token for more Ethereum and increase your balance. So we are constantly growing and achieving a return that is 10 to 100 times higher than what a traditional large bank can offer.”
Red went on to share the long term goals for Harvest Finance and how it is acting now to achieve those goals. A key element has been Harvest Finance’s ongoing relationship with APWine.
“We’re really working on a redesigned UX – it’s pretty simple at the moment. In the future, we want you to feel like you’re in a Robinhood-like app where you have so much information and graphs in front of you telling you what you’ve been up to over the year and then working with protocols like SimpleFi. They read all this information that’s in the chain and then extrapolate it with graphs and make it a lot more meaningful,” Red said.
“I work with APWine Finance which actually allows you to take a 3 month cash advance on your earnings. And then, through that process, a global marketplace for earnings is created so that instead of having to go to Harvest or Aave, you can go to APWine Finance and have a unified experience.”
Red explained that his role at Harvest Finance is primarily non-technical. His focus is on business development, customer service and marketing. His ability to achieve such a prominent position in the community without creating the log is very interesting and probably a point of inspiration for his ambitions to create a simpler Web3 user experience.
When asked about non-technical roles in Web3, Red gave an excellent response: “That’s a great question. It’s actually something I’m very passionate about. People in the crypto space usually only think of developers, or when they think of a DAO, a decentralized autonomous organization, they only talk about voting.
“But when you’re talking about a decentralized autonomous organization that’s a whole company, right? And you can’t run a business based on votes alone. What you need to do is bring in community members who have the skills in human resources, risk analysis and more.”
Red added that 90% of the ecosystem is non-developers.
“Satoshi has said goodbye to Bitcoin. Who Operates Bitcoin Now? community. Right. So that shows you how important it really is. We have to get rid of this idea. Not only developers are listed.
The impact of a community cannot be underestimated, as the user experience in Web3 continues to improve, we can expect more non-technical roles in the industry. Getting involved now could pay off years later.
