Cross-chain bridges were responsible for billions of dollars lost to crypto hacks in 2022. Circle’s new USDC protocol is a workaround for cross-chain bridges that’s cheaper and more efficient.

Cross-chain bridges facilitate the transfer of cryptocurrencies across the blockchain. Although they play a significant role, they have been a major concern within the crypto ecosystem.

Significant hacks include the $625 million Ronin Network, the $325 million Wormhole Bridge, and the $190 million Nomad Bridge.

The Permissionless Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol facilitates the transfer of USDC across blockchains.

CTTP is better than other Circle features like Circle Account and Core API that facilitate cross-chain transfers because unlike the two, CCTP does not require KYC and compliance checks. Using centralized exchanges is cumbersome.

Cross-chain transfer protocol

CCTP is a permissionless on-chain tool that can burn a certain amount of USDC on the source chain and mint the same amount on the target chain.

CCTP is available on Avalanche’s Fuji testnet and Ethereum’s Goerli. According to Circle, the protocol will be available on Avalanche and Ethereum in Q1 2023 and on Solana later in the year.

Developers can integrate the protocol into their applications, providing users with a seamless way to transmit USDC across the blockchain. CCTP simplifies user experience and liquidity across the ecosystem.

CCTP outshines cross-chain bridges that use Lock and Mint functions that lock crypto on the source chain and then mint a synthetic version on the target chain. Hackers have previously subverted the lock functionality, resulting in fragmented liquidity and loss of funds.

Because the protocol does not involve blocking funds in liquidity pools, which are charged to liquidity providers for payment, the transaction becomes cheaper.

The USDC protocol sends the stablecoin to a burn address on the source chain and then mints the same amount on the destination blockchain. The benefits go beyond burning and embossing USDC.

An example use case is that a developer could embed the protocol in such a way that users could transmit USDC across chains and mint it on a DeFi application with yield returns.

How to use CCTP

A third party application is provided to facilitate the transaction. On the application, the user specifies the USDC amount they want to transfer, the recipient address, and the blockchain destination.

The application facilitates the burning of USDC on the source chain, sends proof of the burn to Circle, and asks them to mint the burn amount to the destination address on another blockchain.

Circle verifies the burn and creates new USDC in the target chain and sends them to the specified address.

If Circle is unresponsive, they will not sign Burn transactions, but they have indicated that their notarization service has had robust uptime.

CCTP motivates new use cases in decentralized finance, NFTs, metaverse and blockchain gaming. Cross-blockchain value transfer unites the blockchain industry.

You can use USDC for cross chain swaps. For example, instead of using liquidity pools, a provider trading AVAX for SOL may choose to trade AVAX for USDC on Avalanche, which is minted and traded for SOL on the Solana blockchain.

On decentralized exchanges (DEXs) it will eliminate the need for multiple wallets. User can open a position with USDC on SOL on an Ethereum DEX. In the background, CCTP enabled the exchange of USDC onto the Ethereum blockchain.

The same applies to NFT marketplaces. You can use USDC on Ethereum to buy a Solana NFT on SolSea. Developers can modify the smart contract to buy the NFT on SolSea and list it on Ethereum’s Uniswap.
