Bitcoin speculators send 35,000 BTC to exchanges as new ‘hype inflow’

Data shows that short-term Bitcoin (BTC) holders are feeling the need to sell BTC at $30,000.

In a study published on June 28, on-chain analytics firm Glassnode found that tens of thousands of coins were sent to exchanges.

Speculative Bitcoin Stock Market Moves ‘Intensify’

BTC price trend halt at $30,000 prompts rethinking from buyers who have made profits this month.

In particular, short-term holders (STHs) — companies that hold funds for 155 days or less — are becoming increasingly eager sellers.

Glassnode monitored inflows into exchange wallets and saw a significant increase in funds made available for trading originating from STHs, which correspond to Bitcoin’s more speculative investor cohorts.

“The recent uptick in bitcoin price action has led to an increase in the interaction of short-term holders with exchanges,” it states.

“Currently, STH exchange inflows are intensifying, with a substantial 1.28% (+35.4K BTC) of STH supply being sent to exchanges.”

An attached chart differentiates between current inflows and those during the 2022 bear market.

It turns out that during times of BTC price suppression, STHs are more inclined to sell in bulk to limit losses. Profit-taking, on the other hand – like now and in March, when BTC/USD first touched $30,000 – has resulted in lower overall exchange volumes.

The numbers suggest that speculative interest in Bitcoin remains volatile and very sensitive to even smaller price movements.

Nevertheless, STHs have become a major market force in 2023.

As Glassnode and Cointelegraph previously noted, their total cost base — around $26,500 earlier this month — has remained intact as a support level.

Meanwhile, on-chain analysis has predicted that the urge to take profits could quickly become overwhelming as BTC price bounces back up.

Historical data has shown that once STH profitability reaches 20% overall, sales will start. From the current breakeven point of $26,500, anything significantly above $33,000 could trigger a significant shift in the composition of the Hodler.

Recent data shows that STH profitability is hovering around 10%, with its realized price – the price at which STH coins last traded – now above $27,000.
