This article looks at two examples of how Cardano’s Vasil upgrade, deployed to mainnet on September 22, helps DApps significantly reduce transaction size and costs.
On September 22nd, Input Output Global (“IOG”), the blockchain technology company behind Cardano’s R&D, announced that at 21:44 UTC that day, IOG and the Cardano Foundation successfully launched the Cardano mainnet via the Vasil Hard For Combinator (HFC) event, giving Cardano “significant power and performance gains.” They also mentioned that “on September 27, at the start of the new epoch, the new Plutus V2 cost model will be active on-chain, opening full #Vasil functionality to the developer community.”
#Vasil Mainnet HFC event successful!🍾
We are happy to announce that today at 21:44:00 UTC, the IOG team in collaboration with the @CardanoFoundation successfully forked the Cardano mainnet via an HFC event, providing new #Vasil features on the chain Has.

The #Vasil upgrade is the most ambitious work program we have undertaken. Today is the culmination of months of hard work, not only for the teams at IOG and @CardanoFoundation, but for the entire community. 💪

Together we traveled the path to #Vasil this summer, so a huge thank you to everyone involved for the amazing collaboration – this upgrade would not have been possible without your continued support. Continue! 🙏

Then, on September 27th, IOG announced that Vasil’s new features and improvements (including node and CLI support for reference inputs, inline data, reference scripts) as well as the Plutus V2 cost model had just become available on the Cardano mainnet . They also mentioned that “early reports from DApp developers are very promising”.
The new Plutus V2 cost model makes DApps more efficient and cheaper to run. The extent of these benefits will depend on the individual #DApp, but early reports from DApp developers are very promising.

One of the reports came from Cardano-powered NFT marketplace Artano. Here’s what the Artano development had to say about their early findings:
“For Artano, Vasil features offer significant benefits in reducing transaction size and market operation fees (i.e. NFT buys and bids)…
Then earlier today, MuesliSwap, which claims to be “the first native, scalable, decentralized exchange on Cardano,” announced that they are seeing “some amazing benchmarks” after launching their Plutus V2 scripts.
