Chaotic US exit is likely to weaken the Afghan economy – Fitch

SINGAPORE, Sept. 2 (Reuters) – Fitch Solutions has forecast a slump in the Afghan economy and has slashed its estimate of real gross domestic product for this fiscal year by 0.4% to a 9.7% decrease, with a further decrease of 5.2 % in the following fiscal year.

“The extremely disruptive manner in which the US security forces have left the country and the Taliban takeover will mean that the economic pain will be acute for the country in the short term,” said analysts in a report by Fitch Solutions, the research arm of the Fitch Group.

“The risks to these projections are weighted down as other economies have faced similar political shocks that have also led to institutional collapse.” (Reporting by Tom Westbrook; Editing by Christopher Cushing)
