Ipswich Town 4-3 Rotherham United: Tractor Boys take victory in stoppage time

Kieffer Moore scored his fourth goal in five games since returning to Ipswich on loan from Bournemouth

Ipswich Town scored a dramatic 95th-minute winner to deny bottom side Rotherham United a point and move up to third in the Championship table.

Home substitute Omari Hutchinson grabbed all three points after Rotherham came back from a two-goal deficit to equalize in stoppage time.

Tom Eaves' calm finish gave the Millers a surprising early lead, but Wes Burns scored either side of Kieffer Moore's shot.

After trailing 3-1, Rotherham thought they had salvaged the tie through Hakeem Odoffin's goal and Cafu's penalty before Hutchinson intervened late on.

The win leaves Ipswich, who next host Birmingham on Saturday, level on points with second-placed Leeds, albeit with a worse goal difference.

Rotherham stunned the home crowd by scoring with their first chance of the game.

Sam Clucas received the ball in midfield and passed it through to Eaves, who showed great composure and hit the bottom corner.

The lead lasted seven minutes before Sam Morsy's cross from the left found Burns, who headed home from close range.

Kieran McKenna's Ipswich then seemed to spring into action when Burns sent in a dangerous cross from the right and Moore got good touch of the ball to direct it into the goal.

Burns was also involved in his second goal. His first shot was deflected by Rotherham goalkeeper Viktor Johansson, who did the same with left-back Leif Davis' follow-up shot, allowing winger Burns to shoot into an empty net.

However, the Millers did not give up hope and Odoffin fired a low volley to reduce the deficit to one goal after the home defense failed to get Clucas' ball into the box.

Ipswich looked the more likely side to score as Burns showed a smart reaction against Johansson before the late drama at Portman Road.

Cafu converted a Panenka penalty in the 94th minute to make it 3-3, but Rotherham gave Hutchinson time and space to score a neat left-footed shot and win the game for Ipswich in the most dramatic fashion.

Rotherham have now lost 20 Championship games this season and face QPR on Saturday knowing there are still seven away games left to avoid going a whole league season without a win away from home.

The last team to achieve this unwanted feat was Rotherham itself in the 2016/17 season, where they scored 23 points, four more than they currently have.

Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna told ` Radio Suffolk:

“It was a pretty wild evening from the first minute. We never managed to gain the control or composure in the game that we wanted.”

“We made some mistakes but we scored four goals at home and won a game in the Championship.”

“We have some lessons to learn, but we are on the right side of the outcome.”

“Rotherham came here and they played like they didn’t have much to lose. They made it really difficult. We just got sucked into the type of game they wanted.”

Rotherham United manager Leam Richardson said:

“They have seen the good, the bad and the ugly about who we are and why we are in the position we are in.

“I am disappointed for the players who have worked incredibly hard. We started the game very well, we had a crazy 10 minutes.”

“The first goal hurt us. We never really recovered from it, it was like a dazed boxer, but in the last hour we probably earned something from the game.”

“I don’t think many teams come here and dominate all the stats, score three goals and not win the game [I’m] Disappointment for the players.”

FuboTV is suing sports streaming company ESPN-Fox-WBD, citing antitrust violations

Sports streamer FuboTV (FUBO) filed an antitrust lawsuit against the media giants behind an upcoming “joint venture” sports streaming service, citing “the extreme suppression of competition in the U.S. sports streaming market.”

The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in New York federal court and obtained by Yahoo Finance, specifically addresses the joint venture's (JV) parent companies – Disney's ESPN (DIS), Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) and Fox (FOXA).

Fubo, which is seeking to block the joint venture, claims the companies used their “iron grip” on commercially important sports content to extort billions of dollars from distributors and consumers.

The media giants, the lawsuit says, made profits by “bundling” sports with less desirable content, forcing Fubo to air “undesirable, expensive content” and preventing the company from offering the packages that the Customers actually wanted.

Shares of Fubo, which has more than 200 channels and 1.5 million North American subscribers, have fallen about 30% since the joint venture was first announced on Feb. 6.

Disney's ESPN and WBD declined to comment on the lawsuit. Fox did not immediately respond to Yahoo Finance's request for comment.

In the lawsuit, Fubo said the combined service would result in a “complete gridlock” and would only increase incentives for subscribers not to provide necessary content to Fubo and other sports distribution partners.

Additionally, the sports streamer said it was charged royalties that were higher than the market rate. In a separate press release, the company said the media giants had charged Fubo prices that were “30 to 50% and more” higher compared to other distributors.

“Each of these companies has consistently engaged in anti-competitive practices designed to monopolize the market, stifle all forms of competition, create higher prices for subscribers and deprive consumers of the choice they deserve,” said David Gandler, co-founder and CEO of Fubo, in the press release.

The story goes on

“By combining to exclusively reserve the rights to distribute a dedicated live sports package, we believe these companies are creating insurmountable barriers that will effectively deter any new competitor from entering the market,” the executive continued.

“This strategy ensures that consumers who desire a dedicated sports channel offering have no choice but to subscribe to the defendants’ joint venture.”

The unnamed platform will bring together the media giants' respective sports networks as well as certain direct-to-consumer (DTC) sports services and sports rights. This includes content from all major professional sports leagues and college sports.

The service will launch sometime this fall and no price is known.

“Simply put, this sports cartel has blocked our playbook for many years and now they are essentially stealing it from themselves,” Gandler added. “Silence is no longer an option.”

According to the Wall Street Journal, the Justice Department plans to investigate the JV to determine whether or not it would violate antitrust laws.

The government aims to complete the review before opening the service to the public, the report added.

The media giants behind the new streaming service, which may not be done adding broadcast partners, are “using their power over commercially critical sports content to force Fubo to air unwanted, expensive content that prevents Fubo from offering the sports-focused channel package.” “His customers want,” the lawsuit says.

There are just 115 days until Scotland start the European Championships against hosts Germany… not that we're counting or anything.

The closer the big day gets, the more intense the talk is about who will get a seat on the plane. Every game, every goal and every faux pas can mean the difference between playing against the best on the continent in the summer or watching from your sofa.

We take a look back at the weekend's action to see who rushed to get in and who looks like they might miss their departure.

There's never a good time for a player to get injured, but with the prospect of their country's elimination from a major tournament looming, no one wants to miss out on anything in the next few months.

Unfortunately for Jacob Brown, he will be sidelined for the “foreseeable future” after Luton Town manager Rob Edwards confirmed on Tuesday morning that the striker has undergone surgery for a knee cartilage problem.

His absence is only likely to increase calls for Scottish Premiership top scorer Lawrence Shankland to be included in this summer's squad. His header against Motherwell on Saturday was his 25th goal of the season for Hearts, having failed to score in just one of the Tynecastle side's last 11 league games. Yes, that's a man in shape.

Another attacking option currently on the list of possible players is Ryan Fraser, who is enjoying a bit of a career resurgence in the English Championship with Southampton. His beautiful volley in Friday's win over West Brom – scored from a wonderful cross from Stuart Armstrong – scored his eighth goal of the season. With his international future looking uncertain, Fraser continues to push his name into the conversation week after week.

Time for a tour of the rest of the Scottish hopefuls plying their trade south of the border.

Billy Gilmour continues to impress for European champions Brighton, putting in a confident performance in his side's 5-0 win over 10-man Sheffield United. A pass rate of 97% for the young midfielder. Not bad.

Norwich City certainly have confidence in their Tartan Army squad as goalkeeper Angus Gunn lined up behind a centre-back pairing of Grant Hanley and Kenny McLean in the 4-1 win over Cardiff City.

Back in the top flight, veteran Matt Ritchie turned up and scored Newcastle United's late equalizer in a 2-2 draw against Ryan Christie's Bournemouth. Anthony Gordon had earlier missed a penalty for the Magpies and Harvey Barnes also stormed around on the wing. It's worth pointing out again that both are entitled to wear the navy blue…

There is only one starting point for our tour of the continental part of Squad Watch, and that is a jump across the North Sea to Denmark. Scott McKenna put in a confident performance on his league debut for champions Copenhagen, who moved into second place in the Superliga with a 3-0 win at Silkeborg.

Further south in Italy, Josh Doig continued his run in a Sassuolo team that lost 3-0 to Atalanta, while Lewis Ferguson's Bologna boosted their chances of Champions League football next season with a comeback win at Lazio .

Meanwhile, in northern Spain, Kieran Tierney is preparing for a return to action with Real Sociedad. Conveniently, you can find out more about how the left-back is recovering – and how important he is to Steve Clarke – on Tuesday's Scottish Football podcast.

Don't say we aren't good to you!

Icec chairman slams ECB for lack of 'moral backbone' on Botham comments | ECB

The England and Wales Cricket Board showed a lack of “spine” in failing to acknowledge Lord Botham's criticism of a major report into discrimination in sport, the chairman of the reports commission has told MPs.

The Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket report, published last June, concluded that racism was embedded in cricket and that women in the sport regularly experience sexism and misogyny. It turned out that cricket was still an elite sport with little to no focus on breaking down class barriers.

Former England all-rounder and Durham chairman Botham, 68, described the Icec findings as “nonsense” and the ECB's commissioning of the report as a “complete waste of money”. He added that he had not been contacted by the Icec for his opinion and did not know anyone who had.

Icec chairwoman Cindy Butts told MPs on the culture, media and sport select committee that she believed the ECB's response to the comments had been weak. “I was disappointed that the ECB did not call Lord Botham, the chairman of a premier cricket district.” His words carry weight. The ECB didn't think it was appropriate to come out and actually say, “This is wrong,” she said.

“Not only did they remain silent, they also resisted calls from stakeholders and people concerned about Mr Botham's comments and chose to remain silent. “I think they should have had a moral backbone on this issue.”

Butts said Botham's response also raised concerns in her mind about how someone who denounces discrimination in Durham might be treated. “There are a number of untruths that he said about the report,” Butts said. “But the most disappointing thing for me is that Lord Botham is the leader of a first class county. “What confidence can those in the county who may be suffering from racism, sexism or class discrimination… have that something will be done about it?

“I was personally disappointed, not least because he is one of my sporting heroes.” “The influence Lord Botham had on me as a young working-class woman growing up in Shepherd's Bush was truly profound.”

ECB Chairman Richard Thompson told the committee at a later meeting that he called Lord Botham after he made the remark “to ask why”.

“I guess the ECB could have had a view or two on this. My feeling was that we're trying to reconcile, we're trying to move forward and heal,” Thompson said. “Lord Botham is entitled to his views, I disagreed with them. I made it very clear to him that I disagreed with them. But we live in a democracy and he is allowed to say these things.

Lionel Messi is preparing for his first full season in American football

The 29th season of Major League Soccer is set to be one of the most important in the history of the North American league.

It will be the first of three momentous years in which the attention of football fans from around the world will be focused on the continent.

The region will host high-profile international tournaments – the 2024 Copa America, the 2025 Club World Cup and the 2026 World Cup – and features the sport's standout player, Lionel Messi, as well as other household names.

The MLS and U.S. Soccer as a whole will look to capitalize on this.

MLS – Messi League Soccer

Lionel Messi: Inter Miami introduces Argentine striker

While 2023 was all about the fanfare of his arrival, 2024 will be Messi's first full season in MLS.

Given that he only played a handful of league games after joining David Beckham-owned franchise Inter Miami in the middle of last year, this feels like a first MLS season for the Argentine magician.

He will be joined in Miami this year by his former Barcelona teammate Luis Suarez, as well as Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, who arrived with Messi last July.

Suarez thinks Inter Miami should aim to win it all. The former Liverpool striker asked the question during the off-season: “Why shouldn’t we dream of winning all four titles this year?”

In reality, there are five titles on offer and plenty of competition.

Ticket resale company Viagogo found the following:

  • Ticket sales for each of the top 10 teams have more than quadrupled since 2023
  • All MLS teams have seen an increase in revenue since Messi's arrival in the league
  • The 2024 season has attracted sales from 44 different countries, up from nine countries at the start of last season
  • Argentina is the second largest country with the most sales
  • Inter Miami takes part in all 10 of the 10 most in-demand MLS games

Multiple titles are available

There are two up for grabs in MLS: the Supporters' Shield, awarded to the overall league leader in the Eastern and Western Conferences combined, and the MLS Cup, awarded to the winner of the post-season playoffs.

The league will have to start the season with replacement referees after the Professional Soccer Referees Association voted against a new salary agreement.

A third tournament Inter Miami will compete in is the Concacaf Champions Cup, the regional equivalent of the Champions League or Copa Libertadores. They advance to the round of 16 next month.

It will be a difficult task against some strong Mexican clubs and other MLS opponents, but winning the Champions Cup would secure Miami and Messi a place in the 2025 Club World Cup.

But how did Inter Miami, a team that finished 27th out of 29 teams in MLS last season, even qualify for the Champions Cup?

They did it by winning the first edition of a revamped League Cup, a mid-season competition invented in 2019 that included all MLS and Mexican Liga MX teams in 2023, rather than just a few teams in previous editions. That competition, not the MLS, was the setting for Messi's triumphant arrival on American shores in 2023.

A successful defense of their League Cup title would be a fourth possible title, but there is also a fifth – the US Open Cup – won by the Houston Dynamo last season, beating Miami in the final.

This is the US version of the FA Cup and the only competition in the top five US professional men's sports (NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB and MLS) that is open to teams outside of the closed league franchise systems.

Additional teams are available

image description,

Columbus Crew are the reigning champions

While many are still pinching themselves to check whether Messi's membership in the MLS isn't a dream, others aren't so enthusiastic.

Some fans of the other 28 MLS teams are growing tired of the constant focus on Messi and Miami at the expense of their teams.

Some even went so far as to sell their tickets to their team's game against Messi's Miami at the end of last season. With the prices achieved on the secondary ticket market, sometimes reaching thousands of dollars, one could pay for a season ticket for an entire season.

Your frustration is understandable. Inter Miami was one of the worst teams in MLS in 2023, but coverage of them often exceeded that of better teams, including Supporters' Shield winners FC Cincinnati and MLS Cup winners Columbus Crew.

These two title winners showed that they were champions in both the post-season play-offs and the league. Cincinnati and their own Argentine No. 10, 2023 MLS MVP (Most Valuable Player) Luciano Acosta, were deservedly named the best in the league.

Columbus Crew, on the other hand, played some of the best and most imaginative attacking football the MLS has seen in recent memory. In the play-offs they showed their skills under the leadership of former Watford striker Cucho Hernandez.

Lots of familiar faces

video caption,

Hugo Lloris: The Los Angeles FC goalkeeper always wanted a move to the MLS

A total of 29 teams from the USA and Canada will compete in the MLS this season. It is the first time since 2016 that the league has not added a new expansion franchise, although there will be one in 2025 when San Diego FC joins the roster.

There are many familiar faces across MLS, including Phil Neville, who now coaches the Portland Timbers after leaving Inter Miami before Messi's arrival and being replaced by Gerardo Martino, and former Aston Villa coach Dean Smith, who coaches Charlotte FC .

Former Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris moved to Western Conference challengers Los Angeles FC, while Ryan Gauld, a player once dubbed the Scottish Messi as a youngster at Dundee United, found his feet in Canada as a key player with the Vancouver Whitecaps has.

Rick Pitino's first season at St. John's isn't over yet, but he appears to be completely out of his depth. (Wendell Cruz/USA Today)

Rick Pitino is not happy in St. John's.

The longtime basketball coach hit out at his Red Storm team and the St. John's athletic department on Sunday after they lost to Seton Hall 68-62 at UBS Arena. The Red Storm blew an early 19-point lead and shot just under 34% from the field as a team while committing 15 turnovers. It was the third defeat in a row and the eighth in the last ten games.

Even though the season — Pitino's first with the program — isn't even over yet, he sounds exhausted.

“This is the most unpleasant experience of my life,” he said, via NJ.com. “That was so disappointing.”

Pitino has coached throughout the college basketball world for decades and has seen many bad teams in his career. He was hired at St. John's before the season after a successful three-year stint at Iona, which marked his first job in the sport following his tumultuous departure from Louisville in 2017.

But Pitino seemed to take shots at everyone he could on Sunday, including the university's athletic department.

“Do we have crappy facilities? Yes, we do,” Pitino said. “But we are doing something about it. But that's not why we lose. Having shitty facilities has nothing to do with security.”

Pitino also called out his players directly, some by name, saying they were “so unsportsmanlike that we can't guard anyone without fouling.”

“Joel [Soriano]“He’s slow laterally, he’s not fast on the court,” Pitino said. “Chris Ledlum is slow laterally, Sean Conway is slow laterally. Brady [Dunlap’s] physically weak, Drissa [Traore] is laterally slow.”

The 71-year-old coach also blamed his staff's “lost” recruiting efforts for their problems. After taking the job, he added 12 new players to St. John's, although he obviously believes he was targeting the wrong type of player.

“We kind of lost this season because of the way we recruited,” he said. “We recruited the antithesis of the way I train. It's a good group, they try hard, but they're just not very tough… That's not the job. They could be in Missouri recruiting slow players. Believe me, it's not St. John's.

“We had to put a team together at the last second. We will never do that again.”

St. John's has five regular-season games left to play before the Big East Tournament, starting with a matchup against Georgetown on Wednesday. The Red Storm hold a record of 14-12 and are in ninth place in the Big East, ahead of only Georgetown and DePaul. These two teams have only won a single conference game this season.

“I was disappointed all year,” he said. “I am certain [Georgetown coach] Ed Cooley is disappointed. I'm sure the DePaul coach is disappointed. If you lose, everyone is disappointed.”

Pitino actually defended his comments on Monday as well.

Pitino insisted that he wasn't “really kidding anyone” with his comments and that he “agrees with what I said.”

“I explained in a monotone voice exactly why we lost,” he told Newsday. “I'm not always calm and especially not when I'm messing with someone… I haven't fooled anyone.”

“Sometimes I want my players to hear and read my words. That was my intention.” [Sunday].”

Either way, it sounds like March – especially the end of it – can't come soon enough for Pitino.

Mike Rowser, a senior sports executive and soccer player from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has already made a name for himself by finishing in the top 50 in the prelims. His exceptional sales skills and commitment have secured him a place in the championship class.

Joining Rowser is Makenya Gaskin, another talented sports management senior who will be participating in the business sales competition. Gaskin is from Atwood, Tennessee and runs for BU. Makenya's strong communication skills and business acumen make her a formidable competitor.

Roy Hodgson has resigned as Crystal Palace boss so the club can “move forward with its plans to appoint a new manager”.

Hodgson, 76, “fell ill” during training on Thursday after reports he was scheduled to be released.

The Eagles have lost 10 of their last 16 Premier League games and sit 16th in the table, five points above the relegation zone.

“This club is very special and means so much to me,” said Hodgson.

Palace visit Everton, 18th in the Premier League, on Monday evening. Hodgson's assistants Paddy McCarthy and Ray Lewington lead the team.

Former Eintracht Frankfurt coach Oliver Glasner, 49, is considered a strong favorite to replace Hodgson permanently.

Oliver Glasner is expected to take charge of Crystal Palace's game at Spurs on March 2nd

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here over the six seasons as it has given me the chance to work with top quality players and staff every day and do what I love,” added Hodgson.

“However, I understand that, given recent circumstances, it may be advisable at this time for the club to plan ahead and that is why I have taken the decision to step down to allow the club to move forward with its plans for a new manager as intended.” Summer.

“I am confident that the season will end well and wish the team every success in the coming weeks, months and seasons.”

The club said Hodgson has now been released from hospital and is “doing well”.

“Roy holds a special place in the history of Crystal Palace and that will never be forgotten,” said chairman Steve Parish.

“After four years of leading the club season after season to retain Premier League status, he rejoined us almost a year ago to steady the ship and has worked wonders. Quite simply, we owe our continued status in the Premier League to Roy.”

“I would like to thank Roy very much for his service and wish him all the best for the future. It’s fair to say Roy has the keys to Selhurst Park and will always be welcome back.”

A protest banner from Crystal Palace fans reading: Crystal Palace fans have held up banners during recent games at Arsenal and Brighton to protest against the way the club is run

Hodgson was in his second spell as manager at Palace, having returned for the final ten games of last season, when he signed a short-term contract to succeed Patrick Vieira.

He led the club to 11th place in the table before agreeing to continue managing the team for the 2023-24 season, which Parish said “speaks volumes about his commitment to our club”.

His decision to take off midfielder Eberechi Eze in Palace's second half FA Cup replay defeat to Evertonand his handling of injured winger Michael Olise against Brighton both drew heavy criticism.

Olise limped off just 11 minutes after coming on as a half-time substitute at the Amex Stadium earlier this month.

Fans have also put up banners during recent games against Arsenal and Brighton to protest against the way the club is being run.

After the 4-1 defeat to Roberto de Zerbi's side, Hodgson said he had “Strength and Resilience” to turn around the team's poor form.

Glasner, 49, won the Europa League with Frankfurt in his first season as coach in 2022 when they beat Scottish side Rangers on penalties in the final.

After leading Frankfurt to the knockout stages of the Champions League last year, the Austrian left the club at the end of the season with one year left on his contract following a ten-match winless run in the Bundesliga.
