Sporting Kansas City are now winless in their first seven games of the season and have scored just two goals.
In another frustrating outing for Sporting KC on Saturday night at Children’s Mercy Park, Sporting turned an old friend into their undoing.
Diego Rubio’s 68th-minute goal was the winner for the visiting Colorado Rapids as Sporting went goalless for the fifth time this season.
Alan Pulido started for Sporting KC (0-4-3) for the first time since 2021 and looked good from the limited touches he saw. But that was the problem for Sporting KC in the first half: Pulido lacked the ball and Sporting didn’t have that much possession as a team against Colorado (1-3-3).
When Sporting intervened in the second half, it was too late as Pulido only had 15 minutes in the tank.
The Rapids had been pretty successful in the press in the first half and that eventually got them their goal. In a standard situation, the ball was harmlessly cleared in front of the bench by Sporting KC.
Rubio put pressure on Sporting’s Remi Walter on the touchline and eventually won the ball, spinning up for a breakaway. Rubio let his teammate run and the positioning of Sporting KC goalkeeper Tim Melia left a wide gap at the near post.
Sporting KC had their chance on Saturday night with 18 shots on goal. But none of them were particularly threatening. Only two were on target and 10 were blocked
Sporting KC will head west on April 15 to take on the San Jose Earthquakes.
