BOSTON (WWLP) — Massachusetts joined 36 other states and DC in legalizing sports betting this summer. But as for the rollout, leaders on Beacon Hill say only time will tell.
Massachusetts becomes the 36th state to legalize sports betting
Sports betting faded away in the closing hours of this term’s legislative cycle after emerging from the conference committee. The law makes betting on national sports legal and betting on collegiate sports legal in Massachusetts when participating in a tournament.
When asked on Wednesday where the sports betting journey is headed, both Legislative leaders remained cautious.
How soon do you see the implementation of sports betting?
Senator Karen Spilka replied, “It’s certainly up to the Gambling Commission, I believe they have a way, they’ve been looking at it, they’ve done a great job on their other responsibilities and their mission so far, and I’d leave that to them.”
When asked if residents could see sports betting in time for the Super Bowl, House Speaker Ron Mariano told 22News, “If you look around the states around us, they have all the rules and regulations. I don’t think we need to reinvent the wheel, I think we can borrow some of the rules and regulations that work well in the states around us.”
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission plans to hold its first meeting Thursday with Plainridge Casino, MGM Springfield, Encore Boston Harbor, Suffolk Downs and Raynham Park to discuss the introduction of sports betting in Massachusetts. Massachusetts joins all neighboring states except Vermont in legalizing sports betting.
