What can your club do to be more environmentally friendly?

Do you want to go green? There are many things that sports clubs can do to be more environmentally friendly.

To inspire you, we take a look at seven sports clubs and organizations across Wales who are all taking steps to become more sustainable.

What can your club do to be more environmentally friendly?

Create an energy report

Cricket Wales takes the issue of energy seriously

Four cricket clubs in Torfaen are taking part in an energy saving pilot. Inspired by the WSA's Sustainability Conference last year, Cricket Wales decided it was high time to learn more about a club's individual carbon footprint.

It currently commissions energy saving reports for four different clubs and will then spend £10,000 on energy saving measures in each club through its ECB County Grants Fund.

Victoria Jones, asset investment manager, says: “We will be able to pinpoint which measures will make the biggest difference and then we can get some money into the hands of the clubs.” Clubs will not only be able to “not only to reduce their bills but also to reduce their carbon footprint.”

Collect trash and reuse event materials

The bike club paves the way

Oneplanet Adventure Bike Club in Llandegla is moving towards a greener future. For Mary Hext, it all starts with enjoying and respecting the environment around you:

“As coaches, we are role models in our behavior; Pick up trash, repair tubes instead of throwing them away, and share used bike clothing and parts. We encourage our children’s club to explore and enjoy our surroundings while respecting the environment.”

Mary has also been a leading voice in encouraging greater regional coverage of Welsh cycle racing to reduce mileage. Course tape and race number boards will be reused where possible and cable ties used to secure the number boards have been replaced with biodegradable cords. Of course, equipping young people with the skills to ride a bike will hopefully lead to more sustainable travel in the future.

Reward and celebrate sustainability heroes

Fell runners are committed to sustainability

The Welsh Fell Runners Association recognizes the work of its community across Wales and Borders in the areas of sustainability and the environment. The environmental awards include categories for race organizers who are leading the way in making their fall races more sustainable.

Winners even receive a free annual membership and money to spend on further sustainability improvements.

The organization has also appointed an environmental officer and published its guidelines on climate change and the environment.
