YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — Whether it’s on the grate, the basketball court, or in the classroom with a 4.1 GPA, Ursuline Senior Will Burney has always strived to be the best.
“My attitude is to always work hard in whatever I do. So I’m very busy – I go home, I make note cards, I do little quizzes at home, stuff like that. But I also like both sides of the field, on the pitch, in the classroom. I just have to… I want to be the best,” Burney said.
Ursuline continues to win, beating Fitch 67-50
As a three-time All Steel Valley selector, two-time All-Mahoning County, two-time All Northeast Ohio, and two-time All-State defensive back selector, he has certainly made his mark on the Irish football program.
“I think the biggest thing for me was this off-season workout, and I’m training like crazy this year,” Burney said. “So I think just this preparation for this season will allow me to differentiate myself and then just show my skills on the field this year.”
But the BIG 22 contender and Irish playmaker hadn’t planned it that way.
“I came for basketball because that’s what I wanted … I was a basketball player, I play everything else, but it was basketball,” Burney said. “When COVID happened I put on some weight and then I started to love football a little bit more so that’s where the transition happened.”
Eventually, Burney will graduate with eight college letters every four years after football and basketball, along with that perfect grade point average — a perfect combination for the Burney family, which he will continue in college.
“Academics have always been an important part for me. My family and dad always wanted me to bring ace home, but I think that just became a part of me and I just love just having more knowledge,” Burney said.
