Union is waiting for Kaufmann’s decision to loan

By Peter Weis @PeterVicey

Germany’s most important sports newspaper reported yesterday about the loan prospects of two strikers from 1. FC Union Berlin.

Kevin Volland’s arrival at Koepenick last week further worsened the game chances of two young strikers who were taken over by German Champions League representatives 1. FC Union Berlin in the summer. The two 22-year-olds Mikkel Kaufmann and Benedict Hollerbach were not in the squad of FCU head coach Urs Fischer when they won the first round against Mainz on Sunday.

It’s clear that managing director Oliver Ruhnert and the Union administration team both want to place talent in locations where they can attract more prospective players. Kaufmann spent the last few seasons on loan from his home club FC Copenhagen at Hamburger SV and Karlsruher SC in the 2nd Bundesliga. Hollerbach helped his third division club SV Wehen Wiesbaden to rise last year.

Both players are linked with loan deals to the second division. According to various sources, Hannover 96 is still interested in a takeover. In a report published yesterday, the tabloid “Sport Bild” claims that FC St. Pauli and Fortuna Düsseldorf have also expressed an interest in Kaufmann. The tabloid goes on to claim that Union is awaiting Kaufmann’s decision before deciding on a player’s loan deal.

Bild’s claim that Union is willing to loan one of the players seems entirely justified. It is also assumed that the people from Köpenick will prefer targets in the 2nd Bundesliga as interested parties. Nevertheless, the tabloid names the promoted 1. FC Heidenheim as one of the clubs that are said to be interested in Kaufmann. The Dane himself shouldn’t be interested in such a move, as Heidenheim only relies on one striker.
