CPS Postpones Outdoor Sports Due to Excessive Heat; The showdown between Kenwood and Lincoln-Way East is postponed to Saturday

Chicago Public Schools announced Tuesday afternoon that all Wednesday and Thursday outdoor games have been postponed and all practice will have to be canceled or moved indoors due to the excessive heat expected.

According to the CPS, regular operations can resume on Friday.

“We’re ok with that, I don’t think anyone’s upset about that,” said Morgan Park football coach Chris James. “Most coaches try to make sure we stay healthy. Thursday is a walking tour for most people. We have three gyms so everything should be fine. I don’t think anything can spoil the anticipation of the opening weekend for the kids.”

The big football showdown scheduled for Thursday in Gately between Kenwood and Lincoln-Way East has been postponed to Saturday at 10 a.m

According to the Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications, the city will be under excessive heat surveillance from Wednesday morning through Thursday night.

The highs on Wednesday are likely to be in the upper 90s during the day, the weather service said. Heat indices, which combine temperature, humidity and other metrics to quantify the level of discomfort people might be feeling at any given time, could make it feel like 115 degrees.

The following football games originally scheduled for Thursday are all being postponed or cancelled:

Fenger vs. Bogan in Eckersall (cancelled)

Foreman vs. Marshall in Rockne (cancelled)

Hubbard vs Payton in Lane, Saturday 7th

Kelly at Back of the Yards, Friday, 4:15 p.m

Lincoln-Way East v. Kenwood in Gately, Thursday, 10 a.m

Pritzker at Goode, Saturday 1

Richards vs. Lindblom at Stagg Stadium, Saturday 11am

UP-Bronzeville vs. Lincoln Park at Lane, Friday, 7:15 a.m

Woodlawn at Marine, Friday 4:15 p.m
