BURKE, Va. (WDVM) – North Carolina head coach Hubert Davis has been a big part of the Tar Heels men’s basketball team’s unexpected run as the No. 8 finisher in the last four. He’s also from the DC area.
The freshman head coach attended Lake Braddock Secondary School in Burke, Virginia, where he was a star on the basketball court and football field.
Davis played college basketball in North Carolina and was selected by the New York Knicks in the first round of the 1992 NBA draft. Davis played 12 years in the NBA, spent time as a TV analyst and became an assistant coach to Roy Williams at UNC. Davis took over when Williams retired last year.
Those who have known Davis since he was a physical education student at Lake Braddock say it’s no surprise he’s found success in so many different positions.
“Hubert knows it’s about the players and Hubert knows how to lead by example, how to inspire the players, how to hold them accountable and also how to talk to them as a friend, as a coach, as a mentor,” said Joe Clark, the Davis high school football coach at Lake Braddock. “I think that’s one reason why he will do it. I would be very surprised if he isn’t one of the best coaches they had there.”
Davis and the Tar Heels will face off against legendary head coach Mike Krzyzewski and Duke over the final four Saturday nights.
