The University of Calgary is hosting a new Women in Sport Honors Exhibition, just one part of the Faculty of Kinesiology's plan to increase recognition and opportunities for female athletes.
The permanent exhibition features sports memorabilia from the personal collection of the late Joan Snyder, a philanthropist and ardent supporter of women's hockey.
Items include a Team Canada ice hockey jersey signed by Hayley Wickenheiser, a women's winter sports stamp collection featuring Olympic medalists Clara Hughes (speed skating and cycling), Danielle Goyette (ice hockey) and Nancy Greene (alpine skiing), and memorabilia from the 1988 Calgary Winters Olympic Games and the dinosaurs.
Hundreds more items from the collection will be auctioned publicly online to fund awards for the university's female athletes.
These awards will help recipients achieve their academic and athletic dreams by alleviating financial constraints.
The online auction includes items from the Calgary Flames, former NHL greats, CFL football and notable female athletes. The auction is now live.
Snyder was a successful businesswoman and longtime donor to UCalgary. When she died in April 2022 at age 90, she left the university a memorial gift of $67.5 million and her vast collection of sports memorabilia.
The gift established the Joan Snyder Fund for Excellence in Kinesiology and expanded the Joan Snyder Program of Excellence in Women's Hockey at UCalgary.
