Sisters Britain and Brielle Taylor on the beach volleyball court.
Britain and Brielle Taylor, twin sisters who live here in the western communities, are consecutive national champions in beach volleyball.
On Saturday, July 1, the Taylor girls, who will be high school students this fall, won the East Coast National Championship at the Beach Volleyball National Event (BVNE) in Pompano Beach for the second straight year. The Taylor twins, who were educated at King’s Academy, will be chasing three more national trophies in July when they compete in the USA Volleyball Nationals on July 18-20 in Fort Lauderdale. the Kauai Bikini Nationals in Santa Monica, California on July 27-28; and the BVNE West Coast Championships July 29-30, also in Santa Monica.
The UK and Brielle play beach volleyball year-round for the Delray Beach-based SandStorm Beach Volleyball Club. In the spring, they played beach volleyball for the TKA Lions. In fact, the Taylor sisters played a pivotal role in bringing the TKA girls’ beach volleyball team to the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Beach Volleyball State Finals in Tallahassee in both 2022 and 2023.
In addition to their recent back-to-back East Coast BVNE titles, Great Britain and Brielle have enjoyed success at other events in recent years. Together they were also USAV national team runners-up, AVP junior national team runners-up, and three-time USAV Florida state champions. They were also part of the USA Volleyball Beach National Team Development Program for under-15s and under-17s.
Another great honor bestowed on the twins is being named Platform 1440 Young Guns and the prestigious Fab50.
“Only three other girls in their senior year and a total of 17 girls nationwide were selected for Young Guns, so that was exciting,” said Christy Taylor, her mother. “They were fortunate to be included in the Young Guns and Fab50 lists.”
Platform 1440, often referred to as P1440, was co-founded in 2018 by three-time USA Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings and seven-time AVP Open champion Casey Jennings to increase the odds in the sport of beach volleyball.
Britain and Brielle are fortunate that their mother knows a little about volleyball, having been the head coach of the TKA girls’ and boys’ indoor volleyball teams. Although she has extensive knowledge of volleyball, her coaching skills are more geared towards indoor sports.
“I coached them when they were younger and still do it from time to time, but their beach skills now surpass mine,” Christy said.
Both Great Britain and Brielle have the physical and mental abilities necessary to excel at beach volleyball.
“They are both extremely athletic. They started out in a lot of different sports and excelled at pretty much everything they tried,” said Christy. “Beach volleyball is aimed at the extremely athletic players who have to do everything. There’s no hiding with just two players! Great Britain is very competitive, but also exudes a certain calm. Brielle has always been extremely competitive and ambitious. I think that’s why they make such a great couple. They are best friends and so blessed to have each other.”
While both girls focus on what’s currently happening in beach volleyball, they hope to use beach volleyball as a stepping stone to college beach volleyball. “They are desperate to go to college and they work hard to get there,” her mother said. “We’ve heard some great things from college coaches over the years. It seems there is some interest, which is exciting and encouraging.”
To give the twins more time to improve their beach volleyball skills, both girls may be homeschooled in the upcoming school year, giving them more time to train and then travel to beach volleyball tournaments across the country.
