De Zerbi ‘frustrated’ after Brighton defeat
Refereeing panel PGMOL have admitted Brighton should have had a penalty for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s tackle against Kaoru Mitoma in Saturday’s game at Tottenham.
The incident was one of several decisions directed against Roberto de Zerbi’s men.
Hojbjerg seemed to catch Mitoma in the second half but referee Stuart Atwell didn’t give the decision in real time.
VAR did not intervene and Brighton eventually lost 2-1 to Harry Kane’s late goal.
If Brighton had won the game they would now be in sixth place, a point behind Tottenham with two games in hand.
` Sport understand there has been direct communication between PGMOL boss Howard Webb and senior Brighton officials who have admitted the mistake.
Brighton had asked for clarification on a number of decisions made during the game, with PGMOL later releasing a statement confirming they had been in contact with the club.
“During that dialogue, PGMOL acknowledged that a mistake was made by not awarding a second-half penalty for a foul on Kaoru Mitoma,” the statement said.
“Key game incidents from this game will be reviewed in accordance with our normal processes.”
What happened during the game?
Brighton had asked for clarification on five key decisions made at Saturday’s game which saw a further penalty assessed when Lewis Dunk’s shirt was dragged into the penalty area and two Brighton goals for handball being disallowed.
The club are also looking for an explanation as to why De Zerbi was sent off as they believe he was actively trying to calm the situation when a sideline altercation broke out between the coaches of both teams.
Spurs caretaker manager Cristian Stellini has also been fired.
PGMOL previously apologized to Brighton following errors in their game against Crystal Palace in February and it is understood this also came in connection with an incident involving Solly March in a game against Aston Villa just before the World Cup.
How was the reaction?
After the game, Brighton captain Dunk criticized the failure to award a penalty.
“I don’t understand what VAR is here for,” said the defender. “You bring it to big decisions and you don’t make big decisions. What’s the point of this? He clearly fouled him.”
` pundit and former Premier League striker Chris Sutton said the visitors were “robbed”.
“Howard Webb will apologize to you again, I’m sure! Really awful,” he added.
Manager De Zerbi said it was “clear” his side should have received a penalty.
“Sometimes I wonder if the rules are the same in Italy, Ukraine, the Champions League and the Premier League,” he said.
“I think it was clear, very clear, but I don’t know. It’s over and we have to think about the next game.”
