Three trophies were awarded during a superb day of play at the Nottingham Hockey Center on Tuesday at the Notts Sport Boys Schools Championships.
Three titles were up for grabs; Under 18-level 4, under 16-level 3 and under 14-level 2.
Congratulations to Yarm School for winning the U18 and U16 titles and to U14 winner Reed’s School.
Under 18 Tier 4 Finals
In the pool stages, it was Hitchin Boys School who finished first in their pool, beating Eton College by a single point. Hitchin’s 3-0 win over Eton proved decisive, Tom Spreckley scoring twice alongside a Ben Bayley corner. In the other group, Yarm won all three games, including a vibrant 4-2 win over Richard Huish College.
In the playoff games, Cranbrook defeated Langley Park for seventh place. Bertie Barwick and Benji Bignell scored for Cranbrook before George Catton scored a consolation. Repton beat Richard Huish College 3-1 to finish fifth, Richard Campbell, Sam Clarke and Barnaby Cann scoring for Repton while Jack Whatmough scored for Richard Huish.
Wirral Grammar School secured third place with a 1-0 win over Eton College, Sam Fowlie scoring a dramatic late field goal. Understandably, the final was an equally close affair as Yarms George Kitson scored the only goal in the 20th minute to secure the title, with captain James Beck lifting the trophy.
U16 Tier 3 Final
Katharine Lady Berkeley’s School won all three games in their pool to take first place, while Yarm did the same in his group and set up an exciting final. With goal differences of +11 and +10 respectively, both teams showed their form against strong opponents.
As the play-offs got underway, Malvern College earned a 2-0 win over Bancrofts, with Euan Mackellar scoring twice from penalty corners. Eton and Sedbergh shared fifth place after a 1-1 draw, Edward Bousfield scoring late for Sedbergh to equalize after Benji Bushnell’s opener.
Third place went to St Albans School thanks to goals from Dylan Warren-Cafferty and Freddie Kamasa in the second half, who earned a 2-0 win over Nottingham High School.
The final was a thrill, with Yarm leading 3-0 against Max Jones, Will Ferguson and Tom Graham, only for Jacob Edwards to score for Katherine Lady Berkeley just before half-time. And when Edwards scored again to make it 3-2, the comeback seemed possible but Yarm held on to claim the second title of the day.
U16 Tier 2 Final
Pool A was won by Reed’s thanks to three straight victories, the most notable being a 3–1 win over Loughborough Grammar School that resulted from a goal deficit to win the pool. On the other side of the draw, Chigwell School won two and drew one to take first place in a tight group.
Seventh place went to Altrincham Grammar ahead of Aldenham, Eric Evans and Josh Baxendell, giving Altrincham a two-goal lead from corners before Theodore Green pulled one back. Monkton Combe scored a 2-1 win over St Peters York to finish fifth. Rhys Goodman scored two goals for the winners on either side of a Seb Long goal. Loughborough Grammar defeated Lord Wandsworth 3-1 to take third place, Tiernan Maguire, Morgan Wimshurst and Oliver Mitchell scoring for LGS before William Leyland scored the consolation.
The final proved to be one of the tightest games of the tournament and James Allsop’s 22nd-minute penalty was enough to give Reed’s the coveted prize against a very spirited Chigwell School.
