Jenson Brooksby & Jordan Thompson Almost Met Ballkids Ugly Incidents Video Highlights Nick Kyrgios Indian Wells Miami Open

Barely a week after Nick Kyrgios almost hit a ball boy after hitting his racquet on the ground, two more ugly incidents involving tennis stars and ball kids near misses happened at the Miami Open.

Australian star Jordan Thompson and American Jenson Brooksby are the latest to find themselves in the crosshairs of the tennis world.

In the third set of his first-round match against Argentine Federico Coria, Brooksby – who led 4-1 in the final set – threw his racquet onto the court, which skidded and forced a ball boy to jump out of the way to avoid his knuckles being wheeled.

Brooksby seemed to show little remorse for his actions and simply took the bat back from the ball boy, who held it out for the American to grab.

He finally made it and prevailed 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, but despite the victory on the scoreboard, he definitely didn’t win any new fans for the glaring mishap.

In Thompson’s match against 2008 Australian Open finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, he had a mental explosion in the third set when, after a point, he decided to grab the ball and hammer it into the sky, leaving a ball girl who didn’t stand more than a meter away to get out of the way.

Thompson continued to win 6-7 (1-7), 6-4, 6-4, but it again highlighted an issue in tennis that is quickly becoming a negative topic of conversation in the sport.

Regarding the Brooksby incident, former tennis player Patrick McEnroe tweeted, “Seriously, what does it take to… draw blood… to appropriately punish a tennis player. That is absolutely absurd.”

Tennis journalist Ben Rothenburg posted: “What is happening in this sport?”

New York Times tennis correspondent Christopher Clarey wrote: “This has got to stop. The more you slide it or slap it on the wrist, the more it will increase.”

All the shocking moments of aggression happened after German star Alexander Zverev got away relatively unscathed after smashing his racquet several times into the referee’s chair at the Acapulco Open in February.

Zverev lost his calm after he and doubles partner Marcelo Melo of Brazil lost 6-2 4-6 10-6 to Britain’s Lloyd Glasspool and Finland’s Harri Heliovaara.

The German slammed the referee’s chair three times before taking his seat and then jumped back up to continue yelling at the official, slamming the chair again to be safe.

The ATP issued an eight-week suspended sentence and a $25,000 fine, a penalty that the sporting world widely condemned as too soft.
