The Big Bash has decided to give the ‘SteveSmith‘ fiasco that saw the premier batter miss out on playing for the Sixers in the 2021-22 season because he wasn’t signed. In one of the biggest cash upheavals for the T20 league under the rules revealed by cricket Australia (CA) on Wednesday will allow players to sign with individual clubs on a marquee supplement list if they are unlikely to be available to play.
This means that if a player becomes available due to unforeseen circumstances, a player can be included in the roster of the Big Bash franchise team to appear in games. This could be due to international games being cancelled.

A team can also dip into next season’s cap if they need extra money to sign the player. The salary cap was raised to $3 million for the team, which includes the regular 18-man roster plus two additional players outside of the cap.
These players would have a standardized $50,000 deal. If they end up playing, only then will their $50,000 deal and $30,000 match fees count toward the cap.
This ends the two-time fiasco with Smith. In 2021/22 Smith became available due to the cancellation of One Day International games due to Covid-19.
However, he couldn’t play because he wasn’t signed for the Sixers. David Warner and Smith landed marketing deals to play for the Sixers and Sydney Thunder last summer.
The new system would also allow the likes of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins to coordinate with clubs and appear in marketing materials, with the Quicks traditionally sitting out the BBL to handle the workload.

The women’s Big Bash League will introduce an overseas player draft in the same model as the men’s. The highest-paid overseas male player will collect $420,000 in the draft, while their female counterparts will collect $110,000 to greatly increase the appeal of the competitions.

CA hope the changes will open the door to more big-name talent and allow clubs not to have squad spots and not have a significant space in the cap taken up by unavailable players with Tests this January. It’s always our goal to have as many of these players as part of the BBL as possible,” said Big Bash boss Alistair Dobson.
“We hope the mechanics allow clubs to sign players even if they are either unlikely or unavailable. Because having them in the BBL and ready when available is a really important part of the competition for us.”
The Big Bash begins on December 13th with the Perth Scorchers attempting to defend their title.
