MOHAVE VALLEY, Ariz. – Drake Edwards drove the No. 4 Western Midget owned by Kevin Felkins to victory in Saturday’s debut appearance for WMR at Mohave Valley Raceway.
A series-best 22-car field assembled for the 25-lap feature, which served as the second round of the Western Midget Racing championship season.
“We took the lead pretty quickly. I could slide (AJ Hernandez). A few laps later, Isaiah showed me the bottom, then the power steering failed. He tried a couple of times but we were lucky enough to win,” said Edwards. “This circuit is fantastic. We will come back in any case.”
Edwards drove from seventh place and won the opening eight-lap race. Racin Silva rode the #5 Spike to victory in heat two while AJ Hernandez won heat three in Mike McCluney’s #11 Triple-X chassis.
Kyle Huttenhow in the #57 Triple-X shared the front row with Hernandez on the 1/3 mile dirt track in front of a rowdy and excited crowd. Hernandez took the lead at the start. Brian Corso rolled over Cameron Beard’s #42 but was unhurt. Edwards slipped past Hernandez on the restart to take the lead. The caution came out a lap later for Tyler and Chloe High, who tangled at turn four.
Hernandez fell behind while Isaiah Vasquez moved up to second position. Nate Wait went from 14th to third on lap 18. Tyler High turned three on lap 18 to see a red flag. Vasquez briefly challenged Edwards to no avail. Edwards outperformed Vasquez, Cory Brown and 12th seed Kyle Hawse.
