The book about Gervonta Davis, who went into his fight with Ryan Garcia at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, was that he was one of the toughest hitters in the sport. And so, unsurprisingly to many, Davis knocked out Garcia with a shot to the rib cage 1:44 in the seventh round.
However, it wasn’t power that led Davis to this victory. It was his boxing skills, ring IQ and ability to capitalize on Garcia’s mistakes that led him to the dramatic win in their heavily hyped 136-pound bout.
Garcia overdid it in the second, throwing a right at Davis when things seemed to be going in Garcia’s favor. Davis slipped the punch and threw a perfectly placed left counter hook that landed squarely in Garcia’s face, knocking him down.
Davis, who initially did next to nothing as he just measured Garcia, then took over the fight thereafter. He closed the distance expertly, struggling at angles where he could land his shots and neutralize Garcia’s vaunted left hook and simply score more.
