Matt Gray led Sutton United into the Football League for the first time in their history in 2021
League Two bottom club Sutton United have sacked coach Matt Gray.
Gray, 42, became manager in 2019 and led them into the Football League for the first time in their history in 2021.
Sutton started the season with a 5-1 win over Notts County, but then lost their next seven league games and failed to secure another win in League Two until October.
They have only won once in the league since then, although they did reach the third round of the FA Cup, where they will visit Plymouth.
After Gray added Sutton to the EFL, they narrowly missed out on the play-offs by a point, finishing eighth in their first season in League Two and 14th last season.
The south London club also reached the EFL Trophy final in 2021/22 but were beaten on penalties by Rotherham and said the decision to sack Gray was “extremely difficult”.
“The results this season have been disappointing and our position in the league as we approached the halfway point of the season led us to come to the decision, with great reluctance, that change was necessary,” the statement continued.
“We would like to express our deep gratitude to Matt for the success he has brought us during his four and a half year tenure and for his endless dedication, commitment and hard work during that time, all with the attitude, passion and energy that drove him extremely popular in all areas of the club.
“He will always be welcome at Sutton and we wish him all the best in his future career.”
