The BMC and its partners are pleased to announce that the funding offer with Sport England has been successful.
The British Mountaineering Council is one of a group of over 120 organizations working in partnership with Sport England to improve access to sport and physical activity across the country.
The BMC will receive expertise, support and an investment of £2,790,875 from State and National Lottery funds from Sport England to help deliver on the ambition of its 10-year Uniting the Movement strategy.
Research from Sport England shows that some groups tend to be less active – such as women, people with long-term health problems, people with disabilities, people from ethnically diverse communities and lower socio-economic groups. The opportunities to play sports and become active currently depend too much on where you come from, your gender, your account balance and your postal code.
As part of the promotional award, the BMC will work in partnership with the Association of British Climbing Walls (ABC), Mountain Training UK & Ireland, Mountain Training England and the National Indoor Climbing Award Schemes (NICAS). Using our shared knowledge, leadership and position of influence to create the right conditions for the participation of all members of society in our activities – to create a truly inclusive community of participants.
The BMC is supported to continue to focus on leadership in governance and oversight; to raise the profile of the sport of climbing and to support the growth and further development of the sport. Participant experience will be central, with a system of coaches, clubs and venues to ensure minimum standards are met in terms of protection, anti-doping, facilities and the provision of coaching.
Finally, the award will allow the BMC to transform and establish a talent path in England with multiple transition points appropriate to the age and development of the athlete. Holistic athlete planning supports positive athlete experiences and prepares them equally for life as a top performer and for life beyond competitive sports. Creating a broader infrastructure for grassroots delivery of talent, working in partnerships to develop accessible competitions and environments through the establishment of talent clubs and centers.
In total, over £550m will be invested, with partners including the British Mountaineering Council receiving up to five years of funding. Sport England’s new funding model offers longer-term financial security as organizations recover and reinvent themselves from the Covid-19 pandemic.
All partner organizations have been selected by Sport England for their ability to influence change and improvement at the heart of the system they are a part of, no matter how big or small. This is the first step in revolutionizing Sport England’s approach to long-term partnerships as the company seeks to partner and collaborate with innovative organizations to unite the movement and build a nation where everyone can take part.
Tim Hollingsworth, CEO of Sport England said: “The aim of Sport England is to get everyone active – no matter who they are, where they live or what background they come from. But we know that certain groups tend to be inactive. We can only innovate and fight inequality effectively if we think about long-term change. Uniting the movement is a long-term vision and our funding approach needs to reflect that. Changes to our funding model will help us achieve our goal by making it easier for our partners to do what they need to do to improve and deliver.”
Paul Davies, CEO of BMC said: “The BMC is at an important crossroads with growing participation in all disciplines we represent and exciting developments in competitive climbing. We have a responsibility to ensure that everyone can participate responsibly, safely and that they are supported to reach their potential.
“As part of the ‘Uniting the Movement’ strategy and support from Sport England and together with our partners we will create an environment where participants, volunteers and administrators reflect the demographics of the nation and create a brighter future for climbers, hill walkers and create mountaineers.”
