Sparky’s Cup: How ‘soft’ is the power of sport?
2022 has been a busy year at the intersection of sports and geopolitics. Qatar is just the latest nation to make a name for itself with the upcoming FIFA Men’s World Cup and to have expressed their ‘soft power’ through the use of the sport. We’ve seen China do it with the Winter Olympics earlier this year and Saudi Arabia with a new golf league, while Russia has lost its sporting soft power from sanctions following its invasion of Ukraine.
But this is not a new phenomenon; Global sport has always been entangled in political messages and international power politics. As part of ASU’s Sparky’s Cup program, join the New America’s National Fellows Program and Arizona State University’s Convergence Lab to explore how nations use sport to advance political goals and how we fans as “consumers” of sport should reflect on and respond to these efforts.
