Celebrities threaten to leave Twitter as Elon Musk becomes owner

A string of celebrities are threatening to quit Twitter after Elon Musk bought the platform in a $44bn (£38.1bn) takeover.

Musk first placed a bid for the site in April, prompting widespread backlash, boycott threats, and a high-profile legal battle.

He has been the owner since Thursday (October 27th).

The Tesla CEO previously urged his “worst critics” to stay on Twitter in the name of freedom of expression, tweeting on Friday (October 28): “The bird is freed.”

Here are some of the celebrities and public figures who are threatening to leave Twitter if Musk takes over.

The She Hulk actress initially deactivated her account after Musk’s initial offer in April over concerns about how the platform would change under Musk’s ownership.

In a final message to her followers, she wrote: “Ah he has twitter. I want this to be my last tweet,” she shared alongside a series of cute snaps of her dog.

“Just really *any* excuse to show pictures of Barold. I fear this free speech imperative will help this platform from hell reach its ultimate form of utterly lawless hatred, bigotry and misogyny,” she added.

The actor also joked that Musk’s purchase of the platform would stop them from being a “total threat to society” on the app.

Her account was later reactivated and is currently still on Twitter, with no comments made as to whether she will be leaving the app again.

Actor Farrow threatened to leave the platform in April after news of Musk’s initial offer, fearing the site could become more “toxic” and “hateful.”

In a now-deleted tweet, the Watcher star wrote, “Well, when Twitter gets even more toxic — with Trumpy-treasonable lies and all that hate — it’s going to be taken less seriously, and people like me will quit for peace of mind.”

She later tweeted Musk that said, “Keep Twitter worthy of your past accomplishments and legitimate people everywhere.”

She is currently still active on Twitter on Friday (October 28th).

Shaun King

Activist King temporarily deleted his Twitter account after the acquisition was announced in April, saying the billionaire’s purchase is “not about left versus right,” it’s “about white power.”

He wrote: “The man was raised in apartheid by a white nationalist. He is upset that Twitter doesn’t allow white nationalists to attack/harass people. That is his definition of free speech.”

Since Musk’s return to Twitter, King has retweeted a series of articles criticizing Musk and his purchase of the platform.

Amy Siskind

The activist and author has been a vocal opponent of Musk and his Twitter acquisition, announcing her plans to leave the platform in April.

She wrote, “Whatever content I post here is directly enriching a man I absolutely loathe,” and told her followers she would use Facebook instead.

Following the recent announcement, Siskind wrote, “Twitter under Elon Musk is the next Musk Social,” comparing it to Donald Trump’s Truth Social platform. She still stays on the platform.

George Takei

Star Trek actor Takei said he was considering exiting the platform over concerns it could become “more toxic.”

He tweeted: “Should this place become more toxic, I promise to do even more to strengthen reason, science, compassion and the rule of law.

“The fight against fascism, misinformation and hatred requires tough fighters. I hope you stay in the fight, right next to me,” he added.
