Ralph Hasenhuttl says Southampton’s return to the King Power Stadium will be fueled by an ongoing complaint over last season’s heavy defeat at Leicester.
The Saints were defeated 4-1 by the Foxes on the final day of the 2021/22 Premier League season after falling behind from a controversial James Maddison goal.
Hasenhuttl’s side had had possession when play was stopped early in the second half due to Jamie Vardy’s injury, but referee Jon Moss then presented the ball back to the hosts, resulting in Maddison.
“I still have to say that I can’t understand what happened there back then,” said the Saints coach, referring to the duel on Saturday.
“That was definitely crucial for this game. It’s always motivating when you lose a game, but when you lose it that way, even more so.
“The path was absolutely not right and not fair. We were punished for something that wasn’t right.
“It’s gone and we can’t win this game. But we can win this game at the weekend and that’s the goal and that’s why we’re going there with the necessary motivation.”
Saints striker Che Adams will be fit for the Foxes after suffering a minor injury in last weekend’s 2-2 home draw with Leeds.
Romain Perraud, Tino Livramento and Theo Walcott are still unavailable.
