NITRO, W.Va. — The city of Nitro is preparing to open a new sports complex.
According to city spokesman Joe Stevens, there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Nitro Sports Complex on Friday morning, followed by a grand opening celebration of the complex and the pool opening Saturday at 11 a.m.
Since groundbreaking for the $5 million-plus sports complex last August, the pool was one of the first projects to be tackled, and Stevens said the pool area is now complete except for the slides. He said they were delayed due to supply chain issues but would arrive later next month.
Stevens said Saturday’s celebration will be rounded out with students from Nitro High School helping serve hundreds of burgers made by a local chef to the new pool’s first guests.
“The really cool thing is that one of the councillors, the council at large, Bill Javins is known for offering hot dogs at our Halloween Hoedown. I mean, he just throws the grill away and we have free hot dogs, well, “He’s the cook of 1,000 free cheeseburgers starting at noon this Saturday,” Stevens said.
Park Avenue in front of City Park will be closed on Saturday for the event. A stage will be set up for The Esquires from 7pm and fireworks from 9:30pm. Stevens expects a large crowd.
He also told MetroNews that he is pleased with the positive development not only in the Nitro community, but also through the efforts Mayor Kay Summers is making in Clendenin as well as other communities in the area.
“It’s really cool and it’s really great what Mayor Goodwin is doing here in Charleston, what Frank Mullins is doing in South Charleston, you see good things happening all over the Kanawha-Metro Valley area,” he said.
Stevens said Nitro was just one of the communities that demolished derelict buildings that no longer served a purpose and were an eyesore to residents. He said the project is now opening up discussion about new potential for the region.
“There’s a lot of really good space out there, and Mayor Casebolt and city planner Reed both hear from companies saying, ‘Hey, we see the space, we’re interested,'” Stevens said.
Stevens said the tennis and pickleball courts at the Nitro Sports Complex are ahead of schedule and expected to open sometime next month in June. He also said they plan to host the first major tournament at the new complex — the Kanawha County Metro 911 First Responders Tournament — in mid-July.
