Reeco Hackett says Portsmouth “should do better” after losing 3-1 in the first division to promotion pursuers Plymouth Argyle.
The forward scored Pompey’s only goal of the game in the 79th minute at Home Park on Saturday in front of a packed house.
Despite pressing in the final minutes, they couldn’t find an equalizer and conceded again in injury time.
“I think we actually had chances to add a few more goals and the goals we gave away are probably too soft.”
Portsmouth drew 2–2 with Plymouth earlier in the season at Fratton Park thanks to an injury-time equalizer from Hackett.
The 25-year-old, who nearly left the club on transfer deadline day last month, came on as a late substitute in Saturday’s game.
“If you look at the chances that both sides had, I think we were better between the two boxes,” he added.
“It’s tough because they’re in really good shape and we’re still coming into new shape with a new manager.
“It’s those last bits where it matters what happens next. We weren’t good enough, we didn’t score enough goals, we conceded way too many goals and the honest truth is we should do better – it’s disappointing.”

Portsmouth were without first-choice goalkeeper Matt Macey, who was ill and did not travel.
Josh Oluwayemi took over the starting eleven and coach John Mousinho was satisfied with his performance: “Fortunately we have a capable substitute in Josh, who I think played very well.
“He made some excellent saves and was unlucky a few times but I would say he kept us in the game in the second half.”
Portsmouth sit 11th in the League One table and 12 points from the play-off places with 18 games to go.
Since taking over as head coach, Mousinho has guided the club to two wins, one draw and two defeats.
The former Oxford United player believes his side are headed in the right direction: “I was happy at half-time and for the first 45 minutes I thought we were the better team without doing much.
“Thanks to the players who found a way back into the game in the second half and we were probably unlucky not to steal it in the end.
“But the message in the dressing room is: let’s not wait until we’re 2-0 behind to really turn things around.
“Plymouth attacked us with pace and power and in the end it was probably a deserved win for them but there are some positives for us.”
Portsmouth host Burton at Fratton Park on Tuesday.
