Ford has issued a recall for 42,652 Bronco Sport and Escape small SUVs with 1.5-liter three-cylinder engines because a cracked fuel injector can lead to an engine fire. The Bronco Sport SUVs are from the 2022 and 2023 model years, while the affected Escape models are from 2022.
Ford tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that “a fuel injector may rupture, causing fuel or vapors to migrate to and accumulate near ignition sources, potentially resulting in an engine compartment fire.”
If the issue sounds familiar, this expands on a previous recall. In 2022, Ford recalled another line of Escape and Bronco sport SUVs due to defective fuel injectors. Dealers fixed the problem by installing new software designed to detect and warn of leaks and installing drain pipes that ensured leaking fuel fell to the ground rather than remaining in the engine.
These vehicles were not part of this recall because they used a redesigned fuel injector that Ford believed did not have the same problem. However, the company now states that it is aware of at least five SUV fires involving the new fuel injector.
So dealers will try the same solution – installing software designed to detect and warn of dangers, and a drain hose to direct spilled fuel to the ground where it is less dangerous.
Manufacturers recall many cars to fix safety defects, sometimes more than once. Automakers try to reach every owner and ask them to bring the vehicle in for repairs, but they rarely reach everyone. Millions of vehicles on American roads need free recall repairs. Check the simple VIN tool in our recall center to see if your car is eligible.
