Real Madrid 4-1 Valencia: Karim Benzema and Vinicius Junior score twice in the key win

Karim Benzema was on the spot at Real Madrid’s opener

Real Madrid extended their lead at the top of La Liga to eight points as they celebrated a home win over Valencia.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side slowly took control of the game, leading through a Karim Benzema penalty after Casemiro was fouled just before half-time.

Valencia were upset by the decision and faded greatly, giving Vinicius Junior two easy placings in the second half.

Goncalo Guedes saw a saved penalty but headed on the rebound to Valencia before the classic Benzema hit again.

The French striker now has 301 goals for Real and behind Cristiano Ronaldo, Raul and Alfredo Di Stéfano in the club’s all-time goalscoring list.

“I’m very proud,” said Benzema. “Scoring so many goals at this club makes me very happy. For me this is the greatest club in the world. Today I thought we had a great performance after losing to Getafe.”

The success means Real are eight points ahead of the top La Liga in Seville, which have two games to go and face Getafe on Sunday.

Ancelotti’s team are now unbeaten in 27 home games in La Liga.

Despite a brave start from the guests, Real began working with Jasper Cillessen on a regular basis and he played both Eder Militao and Marco Asensio before Luka Modric hit the bar.

At a crucial moment just before half-time, Omar Alderete judged that he had brought Casemiro down in the penalty area, causing Benzema to shoot a penalty high into the net. Valencia felt that Casemiro had encountered the challenge and they had little reaction when they surrendered after the break.

Vinicius took advantage of eight meters when Mouctar Diakhaby was unable to clear his foot and the Brazilian headed his second ball from one meter when Asensio’s shot was blocked.

Courtois made eye-catching saves at a late rally in Valencia – including against Guedes’ penalty – but Benzema ended the night in class when he spun in the box and Real coolly hit the fourth with the side.
