` Pointless Celebrities: Clare Balding’s royal lineage and link to Oliver Cromwell

Clare Balding is one of the most high-profile sports presenters in the country, with appearances as the ` Sports Personality of the Year and Olympic coverage.

She is also an avid author with eight books published.

The 50-year-old presenter began her career as an amateur jockey before joining the ` as a trainee.

Her experience with horse racing was due in part to her family connections to the racing world, in which her father, Ian Balding, was a top horse trainer.

Clare’s equestrian background isn’t the only fascinating thing in her family history, however – she also has aristocratic and royal ancestry.

Balding’s first famous family connection is comedian Miranda Hart, who is her tenth cousin. The couple attended Downe House School together.

You share with Sir William Leveson-Gower, 4th Baronet, a nine-time great-grandfather.

One of Clare’s ancestors is Sir William Leveson-Gower, 4th Baronet.

Her maternal grandfather was her trainer Peter Hastings-Bass and the 17th Earl of Huntingdon was her maternal uncle. He was once the coach of Queen Elizabeth II.

In addition, Priscilla Hastings was her maternal grandmother. Hastings is descended from the Earls of Derby and was one of the first women to be elected to the Jockey Club.

Appears in an episode of Who Do You Think You Are? In 2017, Clare discovered that she is also the great-granddaughter of MP Sir Malcolm Bullock.

His sexuality had to be kept secret as homosexuality was illegal in Britain at the time.

The star’s best-known link falls on Balding’s matrilineal page.

Her great-great-grandparents Edward Stanley, 17th Earl of Derby and Lady Alice Montagu both descend from Henry VII.

The earl’s family history has been traced back to Sir Thomas Frankland, making Clare an 11-time great-granddaughter of Oliver Cromwell.

Clare is now married to Alice Arnold.

The couple married in a private ceremony in 2015, having previously entered into a civil partnership in 2006.

They live with their Tibetan terrier Archie.
