New computer illustrations have shown what awaits the next generation Mitsubishi Pajero Sport What a four-wheel drive station wagon might look like when it hits showrooms in 2025.
Mitsubishi confirmed earlier this year that a successor to the Pajero Sport – the SUV version of the Triton ute – will appear in 2025, Drive exclusively reported in January 2023.
It has yet to be photographed for testing purposes, but Drive commissioned digital artist Theottle to illustrate what it might look like, taking cues from the size and style of the new Triton.
These images take on an American-style appearance with a more upright and imposing rear end housing sharp LED taillights, a straighter window line and a lower bumper than today’s model.
It is expected to carry over the developments introduced with the new Triton, including a larger and stiffer frame, larger body, a more advanced interior with larger screens and a longer list of safety equipment.
It will likely share the Triton’s 2.4-litre, four-cylinder, twin-turbocharged, 150 kW/470 Nm diesel engine, replacing the current model’s 2.4-litre, 133 kW, 430 Nm single-turbocharged engine.
Both the new and old Triton have a six-speed automatic gearbox, while the current Pajero Sport has an eight-speed gearbox.
Prices are expected to increase compared to the current Pajero Sport as the new model inherits the larger footprint, new technology and more powerful engine of the Triton.
The current Mitsubishi Pajero Sport costs between $47,740 and $65,490. Pricing for the new Triton ute is yet to be announced.
The exact arrival time for the 2025 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport has yet to be announced. However, plans put forward by Mitsubishi headquarters earlier this year confirmed the launch of a “platform pick-up truck” – the term given to Ute-based four-wheel drive vehicles such as the Triton 2025.
According to comments by Mitsubishi executives to Australian media last month, there is a chance – albeit slim – that the Pajero Sport could take on the full-size ‘Pajero’ name.
“If we can introduce Pajero, it’s a wonderful dream for us,” Mitsubishi Motors CEO Takao Kato told media outlets like Drive.
Kato-san later said, “Of course, if we … produce a Pajero Sport vehicle, I would like to launch it in Australia as a successor to the Pajero Sport.”
“Or it depends on the product concept, it can also be a Pajero. We’re thinking about what kind of vehicle we should build with this frame – whether it’s more like an Outlander or more like a Pajero.”
“If we could build a Pajero, that would be really wonderful. If we say Pajero, that would be a very high achievement.” [required]. I’m not sure if we can achieve that or not, but please wait.”
