president dr Irfaan Ali looks beyond the country’s impending oil and gas wealth to a country where Guyana is developing into the region’s leading entertainment and sports tourism destination.

“We are working over the next few weeks to design an annual program to position Guyana as a premier entertainment and sports tourism destination in the region,” the head of state said during a briefing at his Shiv Chanderpaul Drive office on Tuesday.

The President’s comments followed what was seen as a successful hosting of the ‘One Guyana’ themed cricket carnival and believes that ‘it’s going to be something big for Guyana’.

The cricket carnival was developed to coincide with the country hosting the entire Caribbean Premier League finals week of 2022-24 and many of the events were well attended as there was an influx of visitors to the country.

The President is looking further to create a similar impact in other sports disciplines in the country.

“We are working to modify our horse racing to become a premier regional event that attracts international participants [and] working in the racing industry. I have already asked a team to reach out to the World Boxing Council (WBC) to see how we can become a venue for World Boxing Council events,” stated President Ali.

In April, the President sat ringside to witness a WBC International Super Flyweight match between Guyanese Elton Dharry and Panama’s Orlando Penalba at National Stadium in Providence.

“It’s not an easy journey, but it’s a vision we’re pursuing to position Guyana beyond oil and gas. and that is what we are aiming for,” stressed President Ali.
