PODCAST #42: Our Chairman and CEO discuss improving the sport

England Athletics CEO Chris Jones and Chairman Gary Shaughnessy join the podcast to reflect on some of the challenges the sport is facing and how they can be viewed as opportunities for positive change and improvement.

You’ll hear us cover everything from athletes and officials to coaches and competitions, explaining the difference in focus between UK Athletics and us and discussing what can be done to leverage technology and the numbers of participants, spectators and volunteers to increase.

We also address the broader health and societal benefits of sport, including links between schools and clubs, while analyzing the potential impact of the cost of living.

Gary Shaughnessy said:

“There are so many opportunities for people to get involved and use their free time. We must ensure that athletics continues to be exciting, dramatic, engaging and a sport that helps people reach their potential.”

ChrisJones said:

“Participation in competitions across the country has declined, particularly among young people aged 16, 17, 18 and over. This is a challenge, but also an opportunity if we think openly about what we can do about it. It is responsibility and accountability for all of us. At England Athletics we will spend quite a bit of time in the final season reviewing the data and considering whether our service is as good as it could be.”
