Gomez-Alonso in the Quarterfinals at the ITF Hilton Head 15K

HILTON HEAD, SC – Kelly Keller and Carolina Gomez-Alonso of the Arkansas women’s tennis team completed day two of the ITF Hilton Head 15K, with Gomez-Alonso progressing to the quarterfinals of the main draw in singles.

Both Razorbacks started the day with the main draw of the round of 16 in singles, battling for a spot in the quarterfinals. Senior Kelly Keller faced Iowa State’s Ange Oby Kajuru in a three-set bout. Keller won the first set 6-3 and lost the next 6-1. In the third set it went back and forth, Keller lost 4:6 and lost the match.

Newcomer Carolina Gomez-Alonso was herself in an intense match with Virginia Tech’s Ozlem Uslu. Gomez-Alonso dropped a tiebreak in the first set 5-7 but came back and won the next two sets, both 6-3 to win the match. Carolina faces Ange Oby Kajuru tomorrow with a semifinal spot on the line.

In doubles, Keller and Gomez-Alonso took on No. 1 Paris Corley and Lexington Reed. It was a tough matchup, but the Razorbacks held their own and eventually went out 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.
