Plymouth Argyle 0-2 Port Vale

James Wilson’s second-half brace for Port Vale gave them a 2-0 win at Plymouth that ended the Pilgrims’ nine-game home win despite retaining the top spot in League One.

Vale took the lead from a corner in the 65th minute when Nathan Smith’s goal-bound header was turned past goalkeeper Michael Cooper by Vale forward Wilson.

Within six minutes, the visitors had doubled their lead when Wilson fired home in the spin after substituting Dennis Politic’s pass down the left.

Shortly after defeating diving Vale keeper Jack Stevens, Niall Ennis’ shot hit the foot of the post when Argyle pressed late without making a breakthrough.

Before that, Danny Butterworth’s thumping volley had to be turned over the bar by Cooper in the eighth minute.

Five minutes later, Cooper was called out again and smothered another Butterworth punch after cutting in from the left.

Bali Mumba came close to opening Argyle’s account with four minutes remaining in the first half, firing just inches after exchanging passes with Ennis in the box.

Ennis had a pounding deflected shot that was saved well by Stevens before forward Ryan Hardie flipped the bouncing ball and hit the bar.
